Festival of the Holy Spirit at Santo Amaro da Imperatriz

Royalty, clergy, people and rites make up the basis of one of the important religious and cultural manifestations inherited from our Portuguese and Portuguese-Azorean ancestors: the Festival of the Divine Holy Spirit; legacy that traveled the world in caravels, and that left marks in colonies on four continents. Centuries have passed and, as well as other cultural manifestations that are preserved until today, adaptations ended up happening. In the case of the Festival of the Divine, it was no different.
In Brazil several ways to manifest this tradition came into existence depending on the region: a tradition that dates back to the 14th century. Specifically in the coastal region of Santa Catarina, these parties take place to a greater extent and, therefore, have greater visibility. Novenas accompanied by music, singing and rituals coincide with the Catholic Church`s calendar dedicated to Pentecost. Periods that mobilize many of the families in the communities where they are held, and that have their high point with the parades, masses and parties on the days close to Pentecost Sunday. Full of symbolism, it transposes to the environment and its characters elements that compose a historical-religious-cultural set of expressive magnitude; result of a presumed collective unconscious manifested in the rituals credited to its protagonists: Emperor, Empress, Court, Sponsors, guests and religious, who together with the present population share in this sacred space-time, full of numinous collective strength.
Exactly one year ago, in the morning of the Sunday of June 9, 2019, I revisited the Festival of the Divine Holy Spirit of Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, a city located in the South regions of Brazil. In its 165th edition, it is one of the oldest parties of its kind in our state. Well known for its size and beauty, it is the result of the great care and organization of the community. I had the opportunity and the joy of participating and recording those moments, which I share in the form of a Virtual Exhibition and photo-video.
Under the protection of the Holy Spirit, I offer this work to the people of Santo Amaro da Imperatriz for their courageous ability to preserve so richly those traditions that are part of our Portuguese roots. May this dedication always be a cause for unity among its inhabitants, and may be a great reference for others.

On it there is the inscription:" I offer to the glorious Santo Amaro for a grace achieved: Nemézio Coelho, 09/15/1957 ". Nemézio Coelho would be the youngest son of a couple and had been called to war, and as he was very fervent in his Catholic faith he made the promise: if he returned to his land alive he would donate his sword to the local Church.
