If we imagine a family of Italian immigrants living a hundred years ago in a place in the West of Santa Catarina State, Brazil. A difficult life but one that also has its day of celebration:
”A busy day today in the fields and it`s already getting dark in Lageado dos Pintos.
Today is the day to receive the godfather and godmother with the children who come to make the filò here at home.
There will be salami, pork, chicken, bigoli, grilled polenta, seolin fortaia and wine. The brodo is also ready.
The nonna made bread rolls for the children. Gigieta is in quarantine and they come to meet the bambino.
The godmother will bless the child and the new room as well. She will bring eggs, bread, some milk and the fregolá.
The godfather will bring more corn flour and the grinder to sharpen the tools.
And when it was already dark in the distance we can already see their lamps coming on the road.
I ring the house bell. They come singing. Oh how good it is when we meet to make the filò.
We stay together, we miss the family, relatives and friends who didn`t come.

We sing the “Filò”: what a joy to meet them again. The children grew more.
The godmother brought some bouquets of flowers, some embroidery and some dressa for Gigieta to finish some straw hats she is making here.
The godfather also brought the plane and the small saw to help with the furniture. We will be able to play Mora”.
Imaginary scenes that I bring here but which for a long time were part of the real life of many of the Italian colonizing immigrants and their descendants: making the filò, a custom that has been lost over the years. However ten years ago it was rescued and has been preserved by the Filò Talian Association of Lageado dos Pintos (region located in the rural area of the city of Concórdia, in the west of Santa Catarina, Brazil). Every two weeks a group of nineteen people passionate about the culture brought by their ancestors gathers on the Pellizzaro family property. They transform themselves into characters who would have lived a century and open the doors to seventy tourists who want to live the filò.
But what is the filò?
“The story tells us that immigrants went to each other`s houses to make the filò which was the linseed thread. They started making food and singing and it became a tradition!
Concerning the Filò Talian from Lageado dos Pintos, Concórdia, Brazil, Adriana Maria Portolan tells us that:
“This project is a dinner show formed by several scenes that make up customs of our culture that is Taliana. What is what? It is the descendant of Italian who arrives here in Brazil and becomes Brazilian. He mixes with other cultures and creates a new one that is Talian. Why do people speak Talian? It`s not Italian. Because it`s Italian with a kind of brazilian. When this project was put together, scenes were composed, which have a whole line, that comes from Italy, arriving in Brazil, receiving work tools from the government, etc. Because at the time the government provided a basic infrastructure, so that these people could make their living here. ... We have cultural support, subsidies for our project. Sicoob Crediauc - Free Admission Credit Cooperative of Alto Uruguai Catarinense has to make this social counterpart. And we were always very well received. This has been going on for ten years now. ... Now that we have become an Association. In fact in the beginning we were a group of friends that got together and the filò grew over time. And we didn`t even imagine that today it would become a tourist product.”
The Paiol dos Pellizzaro is the place where the Filò Talian event takes place every fortnight. It is a private rural property owned by the Pellizzaro family. It is located 7.3 km from the centre of Concórdia, in the community of Lageado dos Pintos. Located in the middle of a large green area and close to the Lageado dos Pintos river, it has a rustic architecture and complete infrastructure that includes a typical Italian restaurant, inn, warehouse and even a chapel. It also has numerous objects, instruments and handicrafts that refer to the Italian colonization in the region.
The Filò Talian of Lageado dos Pintos takes place at dusk. In the parking lot the character “Giacomo” (Nestor Kosenhoski) helps drivers with their cars. Tourists are welcomed by the character “Cecilia” (Ana Moroskoski Rios). With the lantern in hand, she goes to the people and leads them to a place to welcome visitors. Several of the other characters are already there but is “Maria” (Maria Vieira) who coordinates the delivery of clothes to the tourists. They are: aprons, shirts, scarves and straw hats: clothes that date back to colonization times. And in this environment of excitement a kind of "metamorphosis" takes place. Each of these people starts to feel in themselves and to see in the other, something new, different, but which has a strong ancestral component. It is a moment of transformation. They have also tasted the “bread cakes” and “fregolá”, traditional sweets that were prepared by the character “Angela” (Delci Pellizzaro) following the culture of her ancestors. A mint flavored welcome tea is also served.
And soon the character “Helena” (Helena Zandonai) starts the production of bigoli. The bigoli is an extruded dough in the form of a long and thick thread. It is made in the bigolaro. An artisanal way of producing pasta that dates back to the know-how brought by colonizing immigrants and their descendants. Tourists are invited to participate and the result is a contagious joy that begins to emerge. Numerous photographs record each of these sensations. A kind of interaction is formed that the new group of people from different origins in the region and the country.
Everything will happen in scenes. Suddenly, singing and music can be heard nearby: the “Filò”: ndemo si ndemo no ndemo stasera a far filò. The characters: “Gioconda” (Isabel Pasin Dal Vesco) on vocals, the guitar player “Cride” (Enio José Lehr) and the substitute piper “Angelin” (Pedrotti) lead the music. Several of the characters come in that direction. They wear period clothes and accessories, bring lamps, baskets, bouquets of flowers, the dressa, etc. This displacement scene gives a new meaning to the walk on the roads of the Italian colonizers and their descendants towards the filò. A moment of encounter, of recognition, of union.
Soon after, the character “Gigieta” (Margarete Poletto Dalla Costa), the parona, the housewife, holding the bambino and together with her husband, the character “Giovani Batista” (Jordão Zanella), climbs a small pulpit and greets those present in the Talian language, and after in Portuguese. She interacts with the audience, introduces her husband and tells a few things about them. “Giovani Batista” also exchanges a few words with the audience and the atmosphere of the environment is very amusing, as they talk about some particularities that make people laugh. “Gigieta” comments that in filò: ”noantri parlemo, cantemo, pregemo, magnemo anca e doppo balemo” (we speak, we sing, we pray, we will eat too and then we will dance, in the Talian language).
In the next scene "Naldo" (Agenor Frigo), who is a soldier who survives the end of the Second World War returns to have a new life here in America . He arrives and wishes everyone present a good night. He says that he was fighting in the Battle of Monte Castello in Italy, and says that there was "bullet from there, bullet from here" but that he survived. And he finds his beloved "Ine" (Inês Mello) who has been waiting for him all that time. Naldo is welcomed with joy by the community. Then the scene of the Ombrelin (umbrella in the Talian language) takes place. With the ombrelin in hand "Naldo" and "Ine" lead people for a walk to the sound of the song “Vien qua ninetta”. Then he greets the invited guests: “Have you come to make Filò? What a good thing! Now that we`ve all sung together, we`ve gone for a walk, ndemo si ndemo no ndemo stasera a far filò, cena!!! (supper in Talian). The presentation continues with the song "Filò" and with everyone walking towards the Paiol dos Pellizzaro , where other situations will take place and also dinner. Everyone starts from there singing the “Filò”.
Arriving at the Paiol, “Gigieta” knocks on the door and her husband “Giovani Batista” answers and she says in Talian: “Look how many people came to make the filò ”, in which he is amazed and replies: “All these people to make the filò? For God`s sake! Everything for the filò?”. And they continue exchanging amusing words until “Francesco” (Amarildo Pastore) arrives. He is the son of the couple who own the house. In the scene he goes to the mill using an animal as a means of transport, as it was the custom in the colony. There he processes the corn and transforms it into corn flour, which is then used to make the polenta.
The tourists dressed in period costumes enter the hall which is lit by candles and the presentation of “Giovani Batista” begins. He describes the saga of Italian immigrants and their descendants. In his own words he says:
“They talk about the Italian immigration that happened in Brazil. The Talian we speak here, qui parlemo il Talian, is a language that received the certificate “National Reference Language - Cultural Heritage of Brazil”. This language is called Talian which is the unification of all languages, all dialects, that our Italian immigrants brought from Italy: Bergamasco, Veneto, etc. Veneto is the dialect that most composed Talian. So let us not be ashamed to speak our language [a few more words in Talian]. ... But now we are going to speak in Portuguese so that you can understand better.
When slavery ended in Brazil, Brazil needed labor and Italy had a lot of labor left, people dying of hunger and needing there. Because there was no land to till. Knowing this the Brazilian government, needing manpower, went to Italy and placed an advertisement there. And those Italians, in need, many people dying of pellagra (it was a disease that darkened around the eyes), because they ate only polenta, but they didn`t even have salt. They lacked protein and they ended up dying. And they thought: are we going to die here in Italy, or are we going to die on a ship and go “far la Merica”.
But before they embarked at the Port of Genoa, the priest gathered these immigrants who were going to take this “bastimento” [vessel] to come to Brazil, say mass, bless them, ring the bell, and they said “Death Bell” because it was a one way trip and there was no return. And when they gathered at the Port of Genoa to say goodbye, they hugged and kissed each other with the promise of meeting each other in the paradise. Because they would certainly leave their father and mother, and they would not return to that land to see them. The courage of these people. The mother also made many recommendations before they came to Brazil. They were very devout, very religious, they had a lot of love for their family and the work was also something that dignified our immigrants. Inside this ship this “bastimento”, as they called it, they came almost like animals in the hold of ships. Poor hygiene and poor food. Many people on that thirty-nine, forty-day voyage died on the ship. And there was no other way, they had to wrap them in a cloth and leave them in the sea and the journey continued. When the Italian merchant ship Sirio also sank, more than seven hundred Italian immigrants were lost at sea. There was a saying that even today many say: “If you are not here to pray, pray for those who are at sea” [bringing to the present day something like: Don`t stop praying for those who are gone] . It was to pray for those who stayed on the voyage or those who went down with the ship. This trip lasted from thirty-nine to forty days.
They arrived at the Port of Santos to quarantine. Many went to work on coffee farms, which lacked manpower. And many took another ship and went down to the south of Brazil. They came to Rio Grande do Sul State highlands, the "Serra Gaúcha". They went down to the Port of Rio Grande, going up the rivers to where the boats took them and then they went through the bush, opening trails and when they got here they saw that there was nothing they had been promised. There was land, yes, but there was a lot of weeds. But they brought their tools along and they were courageous people, people who were very willing to work. They felled the bush, felled many trees, sawed these trees, opened them to make their houses, to have the first house. Over time, with the union of close families then they built small churches to house the saint they brought from Italy. Because they were very Catholic, devout, prayer was a very important thing for them. Also over time, they built schools so their children could study, learn. It was three or four years since they went to school. These people also built many vineyards to produce their wine. Because it was the one who gave them courage to stay here, strong and hoping to start a family. And as time went by, they formed large families. Here in Serra Gaúcha, we know that close to here there were families that had up to twenty-one children. So it was from eleven upwards, right? Big families. And as time went by, the children started to get married and there was no more land, and Santa Catarina State had a lot of land here to be unraveled. These courageous people, with their small children, in a wagon, often even on the back of some animals, made their move to Santa Catarina. And in our region of Concórdia, many people came from Serra Gaúcha, here in Rio Grande do Sul. And here in Concórdia, many communities were formed with many people of Italian descent, such as the Community of Lageado dos Pintos, where we are making the filò tonight. It`s a community made up basically of almost all Italians: Italian migrants who came from Rio Grande do Sul. So here they also raised their houses, cut down weeds, built schools, churches. They formed families and over time, formed communities. And then they got together to make filò to quench the nostalgia of those who stayed in Rio Grande do Sul and those who stayed in Italy.
Then they got together to make the filò that we are making tonight. And to kill the longing, they played Mora, they made the brodo, but they sang too. And now we are going to sing a song that is the anthem of our Italian immigration which is called “Merica Merica”. All together!" [The lights are turned on and the beverage service begins: wines, juices and water]

In the sequence, “Naldo” says to those present: “It`s great that you came to this magical event of an authentic rescue of Italian culture.” . He comments on the large number of tourists who have participated in Filò, but each time is very special: unique! In the sequence he also comments on some specific details about the sequence of scenes to come, and other guidelines for tourists. He adds that: “The event is based entirely on tradition and on the rescue of culture. We go back a hundred years of history today. You are in period clothes from a hundred years ago. And now the Italian corner of our grandparents. And “Gioconda" will always announce the songs for you to sing together.”
And the filò continues with the songs: ”Quatro cavai que trotano”, “Belle gambe” and “La verginella”.
In the sequence as a rescue from difficult times "Giovani Batista" and "Francesco" explain about the essential tools for work at the time of colonization: sickle, ax , manual saw, planter, choppa [shotgun], yoke, brushcutter, small saw, planer, trough, etc. Among so many curiosities, "Giovani Batista" comments:
“... at the beginning of colonization there wasn`t much food. The first meal of our immigrants when they came here to Brazil was semolin fortaia (onion omelette). Semolin was something that came quickly. They made fortaia and went to pick up birds` eggs in the nests until the chickens started to produce. ... And those who didn`t have a team of oxen, carried the cows` milk in the yoke, to pull the plow, to plow the land, to open the roads, after plowing and plowing. ... To beat the beans, the nonna [grandmother] emptied all the flour bags of the Moinho Riograndense. She sewed them together. It was a big cloth where they put the beans on top and beat to remove the beans.”
The following "Gigieta" comments on the differences in the life that women have today in relation to that women had a hundred years ago, when the immigrants Italians and their descendants arrived at Lageado dos Pintos. She comments:
When it rained the women stayed at home taking advantage of the rainy days to make the dressa [braid]. They saved the best of the wheat straw to make the dressa on a rainy day. The dressa that is still used to make hats that are all sewn by hand with a thick needle and thick thread. And what did men do on rainy days? They went to the bar, played truco, played bowls, etc... [audience laughter].
n the past a woman`s life was very painful because there was no recourse: they washed the clothes in the river, in the drain, when they got home the beans were burning, the baby crying... and the women took care of their job. They had bread to bake, lunch to cook, ten, twelve, fifteen children to take care of. A single uncle or a single aunt usually lived in the house with the family, who helped to take care of the children. It was a pretty common thing.
Everything that was produced on the property was consumed on the property, there were no stores nearby for people to go shopping. Basically salt and kerosene were purchased. The rest the family produced consumed at home. Everything was of the season: potatoes of the season, onions, beans, etc. And there was also an exchange between neighbors, a very large exchange. And what draws the most attention is that in the past there was no electricity. People had to consume the food on the same day or the next day. And when they slaughtered a pig, the meat of that pig was fried all over, then it was preserved in a tin of lard. It was in a can of lard and they consumed it as needed. When they slaughtered a chicken, half of the chicken was also used. The other half was tied to the chicken leg and placed inside the water source to preserve it.
So life in the countryside was not easy. And the women sewed all the clothes. Practically nobody bought ready-made clothes. Everyone sewed. The women had a sewing machine and today you are all dressed in aprons. Why apron? Because it was the Italian custom to save underwear. In order not to soil the underwear an apron was used. But apron also had many other uses. The women used an apron to pick something from the garden, to take the molds out of the oven and it was also used to wipe away tears. Because in the past there was no vaccine, people generally lost children due to lack of resources, medicine and life was very sad. So the apron was also used to dry the tears due to the suffering, the longing that remained there for the people of Rio Grande do Sul, this apron was very useful. And even today we use the apron with a pocket to keep the rosary and the façoleto. The handkerchief was used a long time ago and inside it a rosary. Because do people pray so much. They kept this rosary and this rosary in their apron pocket.
Another thing is that it was very common for children to stay at home until they were seven years old. Because there was no school. If there was a school nearby children would go at seven years old. Today with all the progress that women have had many facilities have come. Woman started working outside, there are schools, day care centres, schools from the age of three or four. She has a disposable diaper, washing machine, cell phone, etc. ...
We evolved, right? The women of yesteryear suffered a lot and the women of today have a much better quality of life in their homes. Thank God! And people are also retiring today, especially people from the countryside who used to have a lot of financial difficulties. When they got older they had to have money saved because when they got older they had to buy medicine, they had illnesses and there was no retirement. Today, thank God, everyone retires from their job after a certain age. That`s really big progress for women too. Thank God! Comparing today`s life with the life that women led in the past, we have a lot of comfort today.
But speaking about filò, whenever there was filò people would get together and the polenta could not be missing. Or polenta brustolada [toasted on the plate], or polenta no tocio [polenta in sauce], soft polenta in the morning, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And today we are also going to do this rescue from the turn of polenta.”
”Naldo” then invites those present to “turn” the polenta: “Guys, now there will be an incredible experience. You stirred the polenta, took pictures, but now there will be the “turn” of the polenta”. “Gioconda” starts this scene with the song: “La bella polenta”. Helped by “Maria”, “Phyna” (Iraci Pellizzaro) is responsible for preparing the polenta, which is then “turned” on the panaro [board for turning the polenta]. Afterwards the polenta will be cut with string, with a thread, following the tradition of the ancient Italian colonizers and their descendants. It is a grand moment: the food, the gathering of people, the traditions... everything contributes to making this moment a moment of celebration.
Then comes the moment of gratitude, religiosity, faith. The procession of the saint, Our Lady of Grace, the Patroness of Filò Talian of Lageado dos Pintos. The lights are turned off again and the lit candles set the mood. Outside the character “Marieta” (Adriana Maria Portolan) instructs the people who will participate in the procession. She makes reference to faith, saying:
“... faith is one of the three pillars of the Talian people, which are faith, family and work. So you have a great privilege to conduct to the table all these things you have: candles, lamps, flowers. There will be a song. We`re just going to be by the light of these candles and there will be a song. We go in silence, slowly until we get there. Once there, we will say the Our Father and Hail Mary prayers. Without the hat, we took the hat off as a sign of respect and then we said the prayer. In the end you look there for that really moment of spirituality, that we can connect with the divine, regardless of your belief. Talian people was very Catholic but that doesn`t matter, right? This moment is the moment that makes us refer to our faith. So we go there and at the end we take a picture of everyone together.
”Marieta” also clarifies to me that: “This scene refers to the importance of having this belief, this spiritual strengthening. So the families moved on the roads with the help of lamps or headlights that illuminated the way, they went to the other houses, the neighbor or the relative, in this case, who lived nearby and there the families followed with their children. And when they got there they pray on their knees, they knelt down, leaning on a chair or a bench and there they prayed the entire rosary, which is called: pregar la corona. That`s why we reference this scene.”
Inside the candlelit hall, “Gioconda” introduces the song: “O Sol de põe”. The procession enters the hall and ahead “Helena” enters with the saint and leads the procession. Then “Gigieta” starts the scene saying:
Now then, with great respect, let`s say a prayer. Let`s take our hats off, thank God for this beautiful moment, in which our ancestors here left this story of love for the land, love for family, love for neighbors, love for friends, always looking out for the community. Today this Italian rescue brings us good memories that we had in our childhood, the stories of our grandparents, great-grandparents, our parents who left this wonderful story.
Also thank God for our health, the lives of all of you here at Paiol so that this rescue becomes even more beautiful and that we have a little time in our daily lives for our spirituality. Thank God always for life, that life is always more important. ... So let`s thank God for this moment, so that you have a good return, long life, health and happiness in your families. A remarkable moment of great introspection, religiosity and faith. Flanked by “Maria”, “Helena” and Ine”, ahead of other characters, the countenance of the character “Rosa” (Rosalina Stedille) stands out. In her meditative silence she makes herself the protagonist of the scene. Her discreet presence during the Filò event, especially in this scene, is marked by the sweet and tender expression that reminds us of our nonnas [grandmothers] and bisnonnas [great-grandmothers], who with their inherent kindness had so much serenity, wisdom, humanity, love and care for the family. Her presence contains not only her real life experience but carries with it the genuine strength of ancestry.
The lights are turned on and the character “Nene” (Filipe Pellizzaro) who is the partner-owner of Paiol dos Pellizzaro, together with his mother, Mrs. Delci Pellizzaro, comments about the property and also about the "Caminho da Roça" project. A charming agrotourism project involving family businesses in the region of Lageado dos Pintos. At the end of his speech he says: “... And regarding dinner, we will serve you a typical Italian dinner, after dinner desserts will be served, and at the end we will serve Brodo.” [Applause]
Dinner begins. “Gioconda” initially sings “Vin polenta e festa”, and then other songs from the talian tradition. Among them, in particular, the music by Mr. Valdemiro Pastore (Miro) that exalts the qualities of the place where he lives: Lageado dos Pintos. In the song he emphasizes the joy of the residents, the colors of nature, agrotourism, the waterfall, salami, wine, polenta, corn, cassava, sugar, cachaça, butia, etc. A typical Italian dinner includes: polenta of various types, fortaia, salami, roasted pork ribs, stewed chicken, macaroni, colonial cheese, radish salad, etc. Among the desserts, the highlight is the wine sago, which is very popular. Dishes that refer to the know-how of the kitchens of our nonnas [grandmothers] and bisnonnas [great-grandmothers], fruit of the traditions of the Italian colonizers and their descendants.
After dinner it`s time for the presentation of Mora`s game. In this scene the characters "Giovani Batista", "Francesco" and a guest tourist participate in the legendary game of Mora which is traditionally performed in the Talian language. The objective is to guess the number of the set of fingers of the hand that the opponents present on a table. Players show their fingers and shout the supposed numbers until one of them hits the sum. According to "Giovani Batista":
"It is an ancient sport. It appeared in prisons in Italy. The prisoners there had nothing to do and invented the Mora game. The game consists of matching the number of fingers that the other two are playing. The one who guesses the sum of the two takes the point. When the point is mine I already play with the other opponent. Often it is played with four people. There are three types of Mora games: 1) the Mora Cantada which is a game in which he sings a little song and plays "filò, filò, filá", and plays "sinque, sie, sète ..." [five, six, seven...]; 2) the Morina which is a quick game: "sinque, sie, sète..."; everything too fast, nobody understands, and 3) Ponto Parola which is a slower game which allows people to interpret who took the point. But it is a sport that was very practiced by our ancestors. They broke up the table, left the gaming tables with their fingers bleeding. It was played a lot here in our region and in Serra Gaúcha. In Nova Veneza city they keep this tradition. Here in the region of Ibirama city, which had Italian immigration directly from Italy, the Italian culture is also very preserved there".
Next, on the main stage, sitting next to Mrs. “Rosa” the sisters “Helena” and “Ine” make the dressa > [braid] and the scene begins with the jokes told by “Gigieta” and “Giovani Batista”, while they wait for the visit of the godmother, the character “Phyna”. Guaranteed fun for the public they told a little in Portuguese and a little in Talian. The themes refer to the daily life and the peculiar facts of the life of the ancestors.
"Gigieta" had another child and she is in quarantine. “Gigieta” says: “Today my godmother comes to visit me to see how her godmother is doing, if he is being treated well, if nothing is missing, to meet the baby. She comes to visit me, I`m in quarantine. Come in, godmother!” (Lots of laughter from the audience). "Phyna", the godmother, enters and carries a chicken in her lap as well as other things that are good for the bedpan`s recovery. It`s a pretty fun scene. The godmother brings milk, eggs wrapped in corn husks, bread, homemade cookies, etc. “Gigieta” takes the opportunity to comment on the ways that the ancestors used to produce, store, transport these items in the daily lives of those settlers. For example when she explains that: “in the past the yeast that was used was the potato yeast that mothers made by the liter”.
But the godmother “Phyna” is also a healer. She brings a branch of rue to bless the bambino [baby]. She makes the sign of the Cross and says in Talian: “In the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” and continues: “I bless you against all diseases, worms, breakers, all evil... . And the godmother “Gigieta” so that she gets better from all her ailments, that she eats a lot of milk, tea... and also blesses her against the evil eye, envy, etc. At the end, again, she makes the sign of the Cross in Talian. Afterwards she performs a collective blessing on the people in the public who requested it. It`s a scene of good fun for everyone and it precedes the Brodo.
Dinner and filò come to an end and tourists are invited to taste the Brodo that is served. Brodo is a broth made from unused parts of chickens: feet, bones, cartilage, etc. On the side, in addition to grated cheese, “Pão de Pombinha” is also served, which is a small bread that in the past was made to please children. It has the shape of a small dove and the eyes are made with beans: tourists love it. With this last stage of the event tourists say goodbye each other, buy the photographs they will take as souvenirs and do their last shopping at Nonna Thereza warehouse.
And another Filò Talian comes to an end. What in the past was part of the way of the life of immigrants, of their survival and which was lost over time, Filò brings it back: it rescues and preserves it. I believe that these ancestors could never imagine that so many years later, their descendants would value it. People they have had no contact with but that have their own genetic and cultural heritage: there are ties that link generations. A people who were forced to leave their homeland and go to a completely different and unknown destination. Faith was the mainstay for this determination. A lot of work and family unity were also fundamental for this confrontation. The experience of experiencing Filò Talian, much more than being in a moment of fraternization and tasting great cuisine, is a moment of celebration. Filò provides this possibility.
When we talk about celebration in a broader sense, the experience of participating in an event like the one proposed by the Filò Talian Association, is first of all a possibility to let out there our everyday selves. It is the possibility of experiencing a self that is within us, but which we are often partially unaware of. It is a dive into the origins, into our origins. A dinner show where the visitor is also included as part of the performance and, therefore, becomes a character. References for this performance? They certainly come from somewhere within, in which the experience will be the deeper the greater our ability to immerse ourselves in the process. Changing our clothes, listening to a different way of speaking, listening to other music, tasting old flavors, getting to know this culture more deeply, ends up being a ritual form of transformation; of transporting oneself to another place and time, even being in the here and now. A real possibility of simultaneously accessing a numinous space and time, the greater dimension of being, of existing, of belonging. Of belonging to the same group, the same community, the same roots, the same beliefs, the same God. And bring to the present moment contents that were lived there in the past and through them we update our bonds, because when we bring them to the present moment, we renew our bonds of belonging; we become more complete because this experience ends up incorporating itself in some way into our existence, and in one way or another contributes to a more complete and healthy life.
As an example of what we saw in relation to the cultural and historical legacy left by our ancestors, I leave here a reflection for our generation: it is very important that we value our origins, but us, what is our generation bequeathing to the next generations? I end this photographic work by thanking the affection and attention I received from the friends of Filò Talian Association of Lageado dos Pintos. A project that I carried out on a non-profit basis, together with a group of people with a high cultural value which certainly provided me with great learning, and which I am now honored to share with you. The following is a brief description of the profile of the characters from Filò Talian of Lageado dos Pintos, Concórdia, Brazil.
- "Angela" - Interpreted by Mrs. Delci Pellizzaro, the character "Angela" is responsible for the event`s cuisine. She prepares a typical Italian dinner according to the know-how transmitted by the nonnas [grandmothers] and bisnonnas [great-grandmothers], reproducing traditional recipes that are served to tourists during Filò Talian. In the preparation of food she uses products that she herself grows and harvests on her property. Together with her son Filipe Pellizzaro (the character "Nene") she owns the Paiol dos Pellizzaro.
- "Angelin" - Interpreted by Mr. Pedrotti, the character "Angelin" is the substitute accordionist. He participates in the Filò playing the accordion during periods when it is necessary to take turns with the titular Mr. Pasin (character "Mingo").
- "Cecilia" - Interpreted by Ana Moroskoski Rios, the character "Cecilia" is responsible for welcoming tourists and for their clothing. She supports other actors and tourists during the Filò as well. She helps during the photographs, makes the sales during the marketing of the products and also assists in various other activities.
- "Cride" - Played by Enio José Lehr, the character "Cride" is the guitar player of the Filò Talian.
- "Francesca" - Interpreted by Marla Sgarbossa, the character "Francesca" is a young farmer residing in the community of Lageado dos Pintos. She is responsible for all this part of Filò Talian`s photography: she records the photographs and develops and maintains the equipment, etc. Furthermore she is also the Secretary of the Association.
- "Francesco" - Played by Amarildo Pastore, the character "Francesco" is a family farmer. In Filò Talian does a scene in which he is the son of the couple who own the house who are receiving people to make the filò. He goes to the mill and uses an animal as a means of transport as was the custom in the colony. There he processes the corn and transforms it into corn flour which is then used to make polenta. Later he participates in the presentation of old tools, assists in singing and participates in the demonstration of Mora`s game together with "Giovani Batista" (Jordão Zanella).
- "Giacomo" - Interpreted by Mr. Nestor Kosenhoski, the character "Giacomo" initially assists in welcoming tourists including guiding drivers in the parking lot. Then he goes to the activity of photography and development of the photos.
- "Gigieta" - Interpreted by Margarete Poletto Dalla Costa, the character "Gigieta" is the mistress of the house, she is the parona (mistress , wife of the boss, housewife, in the Talian language). She is the Talian woman who receives visitors for the Filò. She is the lead actress and therefore participates in virtually every scene. She coordinates and directs the event and the other actors.
- "Gioconda" - Interpreted by Isabel Pasin Dal Vesco, the character "Gioconda" is the main singer of the Filò. Owner of a beautiful voice, she is personally dedicated to the study of music, especially singing and voice. Also integrated with the choral singing, Mrs. Isabel is responsible for the music group which she conducts. She is the President of the Filò Talian Association.
- "Giovani Batista" - Played by Mr. Jordão Zanella, the character "Giovani Batista" is the husband of the character "Gigieta" (Margarete Poletto Dalla Costa). The couple participates in practically all the scenes of the Filò. "Giovani Batista" has a very important role in the story of the arrival of immigrants from Italy. He participates in the scenes showing the old tools, Mora`s game, the jokes and the godmother`s visit.
- "Helena" - Played by Helena Zandonai, the character "Helena" is the sorela (sister in the Talian language) of the character "Ine" (Inês Mello). Both of them are residents of Lageado dos Pintos community. They make the dressa (braiding in the Talian language) for the hats, the braids of the hats. "Helena" does the Bigoli scene, she passes the dough on the Bigolaro and then demonstrates how pasta was made in the old days. She is the actress who enters with the saint and leads the procession. During the event she is doing the dressa.
- "Ine" - Played by Inês Mello, the character "Ine" initially performs the Ombrelin scene (umbrella in the Talian language), which is the scene in which the soldier returns from the Second World War and finds his beloved again: in this case, she was waiting for his return. Later during the event she is making the dressa (braiding in the Talian language) for the straw hats. She also participates in the sale of products at the end.
- "Maria" - Played by Mrs. Maria Viera, the character "Maria" initially coordinates helping tourists with clothes and getting dressed as soon as they arrive. Then she helps the character "Phyna" (Iraci Pellizzaro) in the preparation and "turning" of the polenta. She is also with the character "Rosa" (Rosalina Stedille) in the scene of the saint`s arrival and in the Our Father and Ave Maria prayer in the Talian language. And in some cases Maria also acts in the godmother scene, when there is a need to take turns in the scene. In this case, she plays the character of the godmother.
- "Marieta" - Played by Adriana Maria Portolan, the character "Marieta" during the Filò has an important participation related to the general infrastructure of the event, observing and acting on the demands necessary for the perfect progress of the works. She personally interacts with tourists, observing needs, impressions and providing them with specific knowledge about the Filò: a way to encourage their participation to be richer and deeper. In addition to creating the project, Adriana also creates the scenes, describes the characters, manages the group and works in the marketing of the Filò Talian.
- "Mingo" - Played by Mister Pasin, the character "Mingo" is the titular accordionist of the Filò Talian. He participates in the Filò playing the accordion.
- "Naldo" - Played by Mr. Agenor Frigo, the character "Naldo" initially acts as a soldier who survives the end of Second World War, returns to have a new life here in America, and finds his beloved "Ine" (Inês Mello) who was waiting for him. Then the couple does the Ombrelin (umbrella in Talian language) scene. During the event he is responsible for making "seams" between the different scenes. He is also responsible for the tributes and references to those present at Filò.
- "Nene" - Interpreted by Mr. Filipe Pellizzaro, the character "Nene", during the Filò, has a speech in which he presents the Paiol dos Pellizzaro space and comments about the "Caminho da Roça". He is responsible for coordinating the drinks served during the event, as well as for contacting visitors and managing the business of the Filò Association. Along with his mother, the character "Angela" (Delci Pellizzaro), manages the property and takes care of the entire infrastructure of the place for the Filò, in particular, he is dedicated to preserving the tradition of the food culture of Italian immigration in the region . Filipe is an Environmental Engineer and Sanitarian graduated from the University of Contestado. He is the son of César Pellizzaro who acted in the Filò as the character "Toni" and passed away in 2020. César did a lot for the preservation of the culture of his Italian ancestors and in particular for the Filò Talian project. He was a rural producer and businessman, a pioneer of rural tourism in the region of Lageado dos Pintos. Filipe follows in his father`s footsteps with great aplomb.
- "Phyna" - Played by Mrs. Iraci Pellizzaro, the character "Phyna" is responsible for preparing the polenta, which will then be “turned” on the Panaro (board where the polenta is turned, in the Talian language ), and which will then be cut with a thread. Later she acts in the scene of the godmother`s visit in which she also acts with the healer.
- "Rosa" - Interpreted by Mrs. Rosalina Stedille, the character "Rosa" is the protagonist in the scene of the arrival of the saint and in the prayer of Our Father and Ave Maria in the Talian language. Her discreet presence during the Filò event is marked by the sweet and tender expression that reminds us of our nonnas [grandmothers] and bisnonnas [great-grandmothers], who with their inherent goodness they had so much wisdom, humanity, love and care for the family. Her presence contains not only her real life experience, but carries with it the genuine strength of ancestry. Mrs. Rosalina lives in the Lageado dos Pintos community and has raised her family there.

Besides the Filò I also had the opportunity to photograph part of the handicraft work in corn straw on the Caminho da Roça. Ladies who rescue, preserve and expand the possibilities of culture, as well as, are included in the great infrastructure that moves this entire process of the Filò Talian event. In this sense, the images of that visit are included in this work.

The artisans prefer to work with Creole corn straw, and the pieces are generally made of utilitarian and decorative materials with originality as a differential. Title: Character "Nene" Description: Interpreted by Mr. Filipe Pellizzaro, the character "Nene", during the Filò, has a speech where he presents the space of the Paiol dos Pellizzaro and comments about the "Caminho da Roça". He is in charge of coordinating the drinks served during the event, as well as being responsible for contacts with visitors and for the commercial management of the Filò Association. Together with his mother, the character "Angela" (Delci Pellizzaro), they manage the property and take care of the entire infrastructure of the place for the Filò, in particular, they are dedicated to preserving the tradition of the food culture of Italian immigration in the region. Filipe is an Environmental Engineer and Sanitarian graduated from the University of Contestado. He is son of César Pellizzaro who acted in the Filò as the character "Toni" and thet passed away in 2020. César did a lot for the preservation of the culture of his Italian ancestors and in particular for the Filò Talian project. He was a rural producer and businessman, a pioneer of rural tourism in the region of Lageado dos Pintos. Filipe follows in his father`s footsteps with great ability.

Title: Bread Cakes - Part 1: Preparing the dough Description: It is a traditional sweet that was made by the nonas (grandmothers) and bisnonas (great-grandmothers). Mrs. Delci Pellizzaro, owner of the Paiol dos Pellizzaro and also the character "Angela" of the Filò Talian, prepares the Bread Cakes with the know-how inherited from the families of Italian immigrants and their descendants.
In the 1st stage she prepares the dough using the following ingredients: wheat flour, warm water, yeast, oil (chicken fat), salt and sugar. The proportion of ingredients may vary depending on factors ranging from the type and quality of inputs to weather conditions such as temperature, humidity, etc. Making the dough includes: mixing the ingredients in a bowl, kneading the dough well on a table, letting it rise, then rolling it up and cutting it into slices. These slices are cut into smaller pieces which are then manually flattened into a shape that resembles a kind of cracker.
In the 2nd stage the dough is fried in lard in a large iron pan and after being fried, it is sprinkled with sugar. Then the Bread Cakes are placed in a basket that will later be taken and offered to tourists arriving at Filò. Thus, tourists are welcomed with a party and this Bread Cakes.
According to Adriana Maria Portolan: "The preparation of the Bread Cake of the nonas was done by leaving the potato yeast to be produced since the night before, and then she would make a batch of bread for the family, which was that clay oven placed there in the backyard of the house. She made the breads and from that amount of breads, from the same mixture, she separated a part to make this Bread Cake. Why? Because the bread take so long until it was ready. So, it was a food. It`s like our biscuits nowadays, it was the Bread Cake that we had.” ... “We didn`t use corn flour. We used formento (in Talian) which is wheat flour. Wheat was one of the few things we bought. These slices are cut into smaller pieces which are then manually flattened into a shape that resembles a kind of cracker.
In the 2nd stage the dough is fried in lard in a large iron pan and after being fried, it is sprinkled with sugar. Then the Bread Cakes are placed in a basket that will later be taken and offered to tourists arriving at Filò. Thus, tourists are welcomed with a party and this Bread Cakes.
According to Adriana Maria Portolan: "The preparation of the Bread Cake of the nonas was done by leaving the potato yeast to be produced since the night before, and then she would make a batch of bread for the family, which was that clay oven placed there in the backyard of the house. She made the breads and from that amount of breads, from the same mixture, she separated a part to make this Bread Cake. Why? Because the bread take so long until it was ready. So, it was a food. It`s like our biscuits nowadays, it was the Bread Cake that we had.” ... “We didn`t use corn flour. We used formento (in Talian) which is wheat flour. Wheat was one of the few things we bought. Title: Description: The women`s and men`s toilets respectively are indicated according to the Talian language. Internally these toilets are equipped according to the standards of current plumbing and sanitary installations, however, the anteroom is decorated with elements that refer to the old latrines used by the colonizers. For example, corn on the cob placed in a basket in front of the doors is an important historical element related to people`s intimate hygiene. The story tells us that, over time, they began to be built spaces outside the residences for the use of people`s physiological needs (evacuation), which were called "patentes". They were made of wood, stood high off the ground and inside had a seat with a central cavity where people sat and could evacuate. The waste fell into a pit located at the bottom of the enclosure where it was deposited. In the colony as well as in many other situations in the life of the farmer the materials that were left over or that did not have a specific purpose were called: "stubbles". For personal cleanliness, in the beginning, herbs or plant leaves were used. In the course of time, the ears of husked corn that were left over also began to be used for this purpose and they were usually available next to the toilet in order to be used to clean people`s private parts after evacuation. - In the chicken coop, it was used to transport the eggs and sometimes the chicks;
- In the field, to transport fruits, vegetables, greenery and dry wood;
- When visitors arrived suddenly, to clean any dust that was in sight. In these situations it also served to protect shy children;
- In other situations to clean the children`s dirty little faces, or even to dry their tears;
- On cold days, to warm up, wrapping it in your arms.

Title: The Mora Description: In this scene, the characters "Giovani Batista" (Jordão Zanella) and "Francesco" (Amarildo Pastore) and a guest tourist participate in the legendary game of Mora, which is traditionally is performed in the Talian language. The objective is to guess the number of the set of fingers of the hand that the opponents present on a table. The players show their fingers and shout the supposed numbers until one of them hits the sum.
According to Jordão Zanella: "It`s an ancient sport. It appeared in prisons in Italy. The prisoners there had nothing to do, they invented the Mora game. The game consists of matching the number of fingers that the other two are playing. Guessing the sum of the two takes the point. When the point is mine I already play with the other opponent. Often it is played with four people. There are three types of Mora games: 1) the Mora Cantada which is a game where he sings a little song and plays "filò, filò, filá" and plays "sinque, sie, sète..." (five , six, seven... translated from Talian); 2) The Morina which is a quick game: "sinque, sie, sète..."; everything too fast, nobody understands; and 3) Ponto Parola which is a slower game, which allows people to interpret who took the point. But it is a sport that was very practiced by our ancestors. They broke up the table, left the gaming tables with their fingers bleeding. It was played a lot here in our region and in Serra Gaúcha.
