The muleteers who passed through here: São Joaquim city

The first interconnection between the coast and the mountains of Santa Catarina dates back to 1728, where the men and their animals have passed, the lands that now belong to the city of São Joaquim, in the direction of the city of Lages. These pioneers men who came from Rio Grande do Sul were destined to São Paulo for trade between regions. They were the muleteers, in Portuguese, called tropeiros. With the founding of Lages in 1766, many of these brave men were settling down in their surroundings, giving rise several villages, among them prominent parish of freguesia de São Joaquim de Cruzeiros, that in 1887 became the municipality of São Joaquim.
This epic story of the muleteers who passed by the mountains of Santa Catarina, beyond the commercial aspect which contained, had a decisive influence on the: customs, traditions and people's lives; in the history of these people. Read more »
Personally I attribute that even today, much of the cordiality of the people of São Joaquim in welcoming visitors, has a direct influence on the existence of the tropeirismo (way that Brazilians call the itinerant activity developed by muleteers, the tropeiros). Walking down the streets and avenues of São Joaquim it is common the visitor be faced with greetings from the locals saying: good morning, good afternoon! Often a greeting with a handshake, a look in the eyes, a true code of communication and relationship that presupposes honesty, or even a true demonstration of respect for others.
For over half a century tropeirismo came to an end, but when we're there and come across the smell of smoke from the wood stove is inevitable that more than a feeling of warmth, we also inebriated by a sense of the past-present, something like we were transported to another dimension of life, just something we felt only there. It is the same with the wind, with the sound of the wind that brings the cold of the lands, is the silence that echoes during the cold winter night... It is the same sensation with the cold air that hurts the chest. It is with the fog, the snow... with the hardness of basalt stone... with the sources of all the rivers...
When you are in São Joaquim, you can feel the value in the union of persons. You realize that at the end of each day, before appearing a wonderful starry sky, there is the gratitude of the divine by the harshness of daily toil, toasting with the most beautiful sunsets of all, one granted to the strong, those who can resist.
For this brave people from São Joaquim of so many stories, tales and legends, and that gives great pride to the people of Santa Catarina, I do here my obeisances, bringing through these images a bit of what I feel when I'm there.
