Ethnic visibility of German colonization in São Pedro de Alcântara nowadays
February 2021
   It was with the arrival of 635 German immigrants in 1829 that the first nucleus of colonization of the Pathway of Muleteers between Desterro and Lages was founded. These pioneer colonizers were mostly from places near the Moselle river in the Hunsrück and Eifel region which is currently part of the Rhineland-Palatinate State in southwest Germany.
   The immigrants settled in the valleys of the Maruim river and formed the Colony of São Pedro de Alcântara that was the first nucleus of German colonization in Santa Catarina. From then on other immigrants arrived and built their new Heimat there. Later other nucleus were created: in 1847 the Colony Santa Isabel, in 1854 the Military Colony Santa Teresa, in 1860 the National Colony Angelina and the Colony Teresópolis, etc. The arrival of immigrants was part of a national colonization policy that took place during the Brazilian Empire whose main objective was to occupy the demographic void of vacant lands.    With the dream of a better life and the few belongings they brought the immigrants restarted their journey. With a lot of work they faced the hardships of the virgin forest applying the techniques they already knew and used in their original lands: they planted, harvested, built houses, schools and churches. Initially the little contact they had with the outside world favored the preservation of the dialect as well as habits, customs, traditions, norms, values and forms of organization.
   Some of these settlers migrated to other regions but as time passed adversities were overcome and a certain prosperity emerged. Work methods and the way of living have adjusted to the new reality which has enabled improvements in production processes and consequently in people`s quality of life.
   After 190 years countless historical events have marked the life of this community. And even with greater contact with other ethnicities and places much of this cultural heritage left by the ancestors was maintained and preserved in São Pedro de Alcântara and region: something that arouses our interest and encourages us to investigate a little more.
   When we deepen our look at the identity universe of a people we can for example observe with greater clarity the signs that characterize this culture. These signs are distinguished from the others because they are subjectively elements of connection between people and the ethnic group to which they belong. They are transmitted from generation to generation and shared within a group or even an entire society, however they are only able to exist through their individuals.
   In addition they point to a past tense for preserving ancestry and origins, on the other hand they have dynamic potentialities that in a future time will become what they are not yet. Symbolically they represent depository images of a latent ethnic identity safeguarding over time cultural values that reconnect people to their roots.
   In the case of colonizing immigrants signs can also be added to factors related to adaptation as environmental conditions interfered with the way of life and the application of knowledge brought from the homeland: the environment interfered with culture and vice versa. From the soil, the relief and the climate, through the fauna and flora, available tools, influences from other ethnic groups, and even local policies, everything contributed to what was until then, in a certain way continued to exist even though another way: meeting the needs of habits, customs and traditions. The know-how was therefore adapted to local conditions but in essence it remained alive underlying the daily life and culture including through its descendants.
   The aim of this work is to portray signs of these ethnic-cultural manifestations through photographic images. In the iconographic dimension photography holds within itself the figurative capacity to immobilize in space-time information that goes beyond the verbal. As it is a privileged source of memory it allows the original locus to be reconstructed at any time through a new perspective. However despite the fact that photography is restricted to a section of reality it is precisely this section that allows a given selection of images to synthesize a specific theme.
   In the case of this work photographs are collected on aspects of the ethnic visibility of German colonization in São Pedro de Alcântara today, with emphasis on: language, religion, monuments, symbols, architecture, gastronomy, parties, traditions, dance, music, clothing:
1 - Language: words, expressions, phrases, poems written in the German language are commonly found in several public or private events. They reflect the language/dialect still practiced among popular and descendants of the colonizing immigrants. Language links the individual`s identity to the group and origins, therefore to the feeling of belonging. It is important because it also supports other ethnic experiences;
2 - Religion: religion strengthens the spirit, unites people and is present in community life. For immigrants, religiosity was essential because it gave spiritual support to the difficulties encountered in the new land;
3 - Monuments: the monuments refer to the German colonizers;
4 - Symbols are signs that materialize and express bonds that are part of the identity of a group or an entire community;
5 - Architecture: aspects of German ethnicity are reflected in the architecture used in homes and commercial establishments. Recently or restored these buildings form an environment reminiscent of the land of origin of the colonizing immigrants. Centennial buildings share space with more recent public or private buildings sharing traces of Germanic architecture from various periods in history;
6 - Gastronomy: with original or adapted recipes, sweet or savory, gastronomy from São Pedro de Alcântara is composed of a rich variety of products that preserve the know-how of German colonization. Many of these foods are part of the daily life of the population, but they can also be found in pastry shops, colonial cafes, religious parties, etc.
   The "Chicken Stuffing" or "German Stuffing" is a recipe spread in São Pedro de Alcântara and is based on the cuisine brought by German immigrants. It is a typical food for community celebrations and family cooking. It was instituted as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the municipality by the Law nº 701, of September 11, 2012 of the City Hall. In the month of October of each year the Feast of the Patron and the Stuffing is held.
   Mrs. Maria de Fátima Schmitt Silveira, a resident and descendant of German immigrants, provided us with her family`s traditional “Chicken Stuffing” with a traditional recipe of her family. Ingredients: 6 free-range eggs, 1/2 kg of fat-minced chicken gizzards, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg, 1 tablespoon of chopped green onions and 1 cup of breadcrumbs grated. Method: Mix eggs and ground chicken gizzard well. Add and mix the salt, nutmeg and green onions. Add and mix the breadcrumbs well. Put the mixture in two plastic bags (one inside the other). Tie well leaving a little air inside. Cook in a water bath for approximately 1 hour. Remove from the bag and serve in slices.
7 - Parties: in the official festival calendar of the municipality of São Pedro de Alcântara, Stammtisch and Oktobertanz, which take place in April and October, respectively, are the ones that best express German origins and culture. The population and tourists get together to the sound of parades, music, dances, typical costumes and an extensive variety of products from typical German cuisine;
8 - Traditions: rites, habits, customs and behaviors inherited from ancestors, among others, form traditions that pass from generation to generation. They are part of the living memory of the people and of the codes that link individuals to their roots; in this sense, they preserve their identities. There are many attractions that arouse community participation during popular festivals;
9 - Dance: dance is celebration. Dance is a language that goes beyond words: dance is contagious and among the forms of human expression it is part of the rites. Rites are the means capable of bringing present contents from the past into the present moment. Through them bonds are updated and bonds of belonging are renewed;
10 - Music: to the sound and rhythm of traditional or contemporary compositions German folk songs set the tone for popular festivals in São Pedro de Alcântara;
11 - Clothing: the typical costumes used in events generally represent regions of Germany as well as the accessories and ornaments of people`s clothing;
12 - Handicrafts: handicrafts and handicrafts also contribute to preserve practices learned from ancestors: a know-how that goes from fathers to sons and mothers to daughters; and
13 - Cemetery of Santa Filomena: in the cemetery of Santa Filomena, graves are found that date back to the end of the 19th century.
   This virtual exhibition reproduces the article of my own with the same title and is an integral part of the book "1829: São Pedro de Alcântara, páginas de sua história” (in Portuguese) released on December 3, 2020. This The book in which I had the honor of participating as a guest author consists of 56 articles by 38 authors and was organized by my friends Toni Jochem and Daniel Silveira through the House of Culture of São Pedro de Alcântara.
   I dedicate this work to German colonizing immigrants who arrived in São Pedro de Alcântara after 1829, place where they planted their roots, built their lives and left their fruits: fruits that grew, multiplied and were transformed. Along this route, they prioritized work and even with all the adversities facing the unknown they still endured the pain of homesickness for their families, friends and homeland. Almost two centuries have passed and what today for us is the present, for them perhaps it was too distant a future to imagine the real conformation that this new Heimat would be 190 years old later; and possibly much less they could imagine that their cultural heritage would someday represent something of greater value. I pay my tribute to these true heroes through the synthesis of images that, modestly, represent aspects of their legacy that has persisted through generations and that still remain alive through the material and immaterial culture of their descendants.
