The “Castelinho” (free translation: “little castle”), a proud historic building that rises on top of a hill in the centre of Treze Tílias city. The design for this work was developed by Bruno Kracher who was inspired by the architecture of Thurneck Castle in Rotholz, Tirol, Austria. It was erected from the year 1936 to be the residence of Andreas Thaler and his Family, he the founder of the city. It currently houses the Minister Andreas Thaler Municipal Museum.
   According to Guesser:
“The first masonry construction completed was the Residence of Andreas Thaler and his family, completed in 1938. The bricks were produced in the Pottery of the Colony, as well as the gravel and sand, with the cement and lime coming through the railway to Ibicaré city and from there, Hermann, son of Minister Thaler, transported the materials to the work by cart. The `Castelinho`, as it had been called since then, takes on a prominent role in relation to other buildings: not only in terms of the materials used in its construction, but also in terms of the compositional elements of its materiality: the residence has a turret, a double access stairs, platbands and specific balconies. However, carved wooden railings, lintels, rafters and roof tiles can be seen. ...”Read more »
   According to Souza:
”In Treze Tílias, the main mark of social memory is the castle where Thaler lived and which has become a museum, the Municipal Museum Minister Andreas Thaler. The privileged topographical and geographical position of this museum in the city and its expressive architecture sum up well the opportunity to combine tourism and memory built around this castle.”
Over time, in addition to being the home of the founder's family, Castelinho underwent some uses, but since 2002 it houses the Municipal Museum. Due to its artistic, historical and cultural value, in 2013 through Law No. 1778, the Mayor designated the property to be listed.
The Museum is a must visit point for national and international tourists and receives more than 17,000 visitors per year; being considered a reference in the western region of the State of Santa Catarina. The environments portray life in the 1930s-1940s, and contain in its collection more than 1,000 items distributed among: art objects, photographs, instruments, utensils and furniture that refer to the history, culture, habits and customs of the time of the city's colonization . It is also a space for other artistic and cultural-historical activities.
We highlight in this work its pictorial collection. The Andreas Thaler Museum presents works basically related to the 1930s to 1950s. They immortalize historical personalities, landscapes, religiosity and decorations, demonstrating, among others, the techniques known and used at the time they were painted, the artists' styles, the feelings, the values; but more than anything: the collective imagination of a time, in this case, the founding time of the city of Treze Tílias. At the end of January 2020, the Curator Mrs. Brigite Moser Falchetti, opened the doors of the Museum so that we could revisit and register this collection of works of art. The painters with the greatest number of works are:
- Karl Neumayer, Austrian immigrant born in Vienna in 1922. Emigrated in 1937. In the Museum, his oil paintings portray personalities from the time of the city's colonization. Neumayer was also the author of the paintings in the Igreja da Linha Pinhal in Treze Tílias.
- Friedrich Flachsel, Austrian immigrant born in Linz in 1898. Emigrated in 1935. In Austria he worked as a porcelain painter, and in Treze Tílias, in addition to daily activities, he dedicated himself to painting in his spare time. The Museum's collection includes oil paintings of personalities from the time of immigration, and a large-format work from 1936 with a panoramic view of the central region of Treze Tílias.
- Andrä Thaler, Austrian immigrant born in Oberau, Wildschönau, in 1914. The eldest son of Andreas Thaler, emigrated in 1933 with his family. His hobby was painting and photography. The Museum's collection includes oil paintings of landscapes from Austria and Treze Tílias, as well as a Sacred Heart of Jesus.
According to the ICOM - International Council of Museums, the definition of museum is: “A museum is a non-profit, permanent institution in the service of society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment.” In greater or lesser order, this concept includes the most diverse museums in the world, each one of them within your universe.
I have the perception that the symbolic aspect can also be considered at this time. I refer to the fact that the museum, as one of the “guardians” of memory and social identity, ends up configuring itself as a living entity within society; which, among its many attributions, deals with themes of individual and/or collective interest through the elements that compose it. In other words, it is a permanent door to be opened to access another dimension: past, present and/or future. A place where materiality is capable of referring us to another space-time: from what we once were, from what once was, and without which we would not or would not be where we are. It shows us, therefore, the temporal gap existing between the origin and today. And in this way, it demonstrates the historical direction to which we are submitted and where it is pointing us towards the future: what we were, what we are and what we possibly will be.
The museum is also a kind of “mirror” where we see projected, not exactly what we are, but what we bring from the society and culture we are inserted in: both conscious and unconscious.
A visit to the collection of original pieces in a historical museum is always a ritual possibility of, through transpositions in time, truly experiencing the countless dimensions of our existence: the one who existed, the one who passed and the one who will probably pass away; and even realize how much of what we are is reflected there, and in the opposite sense, how much of what is there we have reflected in us.
May these brief reflections touch each one of us about life, and about our place and time: that we are part of a greater whole, that we are pieces of a great gear that builds another great work: the divine work ! May we always be very proud of our origins, without losing sight of what we are also originating.
Visit museums and immerse yourself in that experience, your life will certainly be much richer and more creative.
I would like to thank the Secretary of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, in particular the Secretary Ms. Dirlei Barbieri Rofner, and the Directorate of Culture and Tourism, the Director Ms. Daiane Zamboni Rofner for their contributions to the realization of this work, including the authorization to divulge the photographs of the works of art presented in this Virtual Exhibition.
I dedicate this work to my friend Brigite Moser Falchetti, for her determination on issues related to the cultural and historical influences of Austrian immigration in the city of Treze Tílias, as well as for her commitment to the preservation of the Andreas Thaler Museum during the period she was at front of the Curatorship of the organ. I still wish your full health recovery. May God always light your way!
I offer this work to the people of Treze Tílias, for its well-preserved history. May it be an encouragement to the new generations.
