Until the arrival of Portuguese colonizers in the sixteenth century, Santa Catarina Island was inhabited by indigenous Tupi-Guarani. These ancient inhabitants were already performing agricultural activities, but also, due to the proximity to the sea, fishing and gathering of mollusks. The earliest records date back 6800 years, and are found in shell middens and archaeological sites. The Portuguese colonization, effectively, will begin around 1675 when Francisco Dias Velho, their families and others, begin the occupation with the founding of the town of Our Lady of Exile, which later became the city of Florianópolis.  Located on the island of Florianopolis, the Island of Santa Catarina is one of the most desirable places when it comes to tourism and leisure. Beaches, lakes, mountains are mixed, and form a paradise of great beauty. The words of the Dias Velho: "... this place is more than good: anyone who says otherwise is lying.  For the inhabitants, the presence of the sea brings them very remarkable features. This can be seen in the water sports, the boating, the fishing, the cultivation of oysters, whence derives a number of influences: culture, folklore, myths and legends, a particular accent and dialect spoke in the city (popularly known as "Manezinho" of the Island), architecture, religion, preservation of the environment, food, simplicity and warmth of the people, habits and customs, trendy ... in the way of being of the people here.
But even with all the development achieved in recent decades, the Island of Santa Catarina still has much of its historic and cultural heritage. A heritage that is the result of the strength and persistence, work, hands and sweat of those who are still here, and those who have stayed here. It is from this perspective that I developed the exhibition: Somewhere on Santa Catarina Island. And the work was done touring beautiful spaces: somewhere ... to meet situations, landscapes, objects, elements and charms that resulted in the most representative compositions: and making up my point of view about the uniqueness of life in this context.
It is the result of a photographic work of more than five years, this selection of images, which are presented in the month in which we celebrate another anniversary of Florianópolis, aims to repay my gratitude to the city that I returned when I was 17, and have lived for 38 years: but it was on the island where I was born.
