Between material and immaterial, the beauty: a look about the Bauernmalerei of Dreizehnlinden
December 2022
Among the set of identity aspects that characterize the way of life of a society it is common to find forms of singular cultural expressions, manifested in different ways: in habits and customs, in behaviors, values, language, gastronomy, architecture, arts, religiosity, traditions, symbols, rites, myths, etc. Unconditionally they are aspects that somehow result from historical connections and involve factors such as: origins, physical environment, adaptation, interaction and external influences, historical memory, social imaginary and so on.
On Brazilian soil, colonizers made their lives, planted their roots, formed their families and their social environment. Over time, our people`s way of being has been outlined. We, who descended from these immigrants, have this material and immaterial heritage. Part of this cultural heritage has been preserved, part has sometimes even been rescued. In the State of Santa Catarina we find countless forms of artistic and cultural manifestations, which together make up a heritage of great dimension, but which is still far from being well known or delimited.
It was in 2012, in Dreizehnlinden, affectionately called “The Brazilian Tyrol”, that I had my first contacts with handicrafts made with the painting technique called Bauernmalerei, a painting of European origin usually found in the Alpine region. About this art the teacher and artist from Rio de Janeiro Mariana Paiva Werneck Machado, who lived in the city from the beginning of the 1990s until her death in 1998, bequeathed us the following text:
BAUERNMALEREI
The translation of "Bauernmalerei" is peasant painting. It is a very old and typically popular art, which developed over about three centuries in the alpine regions of Austria, Germany and Switzerland.
There is a historical version and a folk version about the origins of this art. According to the historical version, inhabitants of mountainous regions used to paint their furniture in order to protect the soft wood from which it was made.
According to the folklore version, the "Bauernmalerei" originated about two hundred and fifty years ago, when peasants in the Alpine regions began to decorate their furniture, in order to make it more attractive and to occupy them during the long and cold winter months.
Limited by the lack of knowledge and the precariousness of the materials used, they painted flowers, fruits, sacred motifs and evocative scenes of family events. With effort and perseverance, those artists developed a unique, enchanting art form with great decorative expression.
The "Bauernmalerei" was influenced by the great artistic currents of the time and that only reached the mountainous regions of the Alps, years after its dissemination in the big centers.
We distinguish the "Renaissance" style, which reached the Alps at the beginning of the 18th century. At the end of the 18th century, the influence of "Baroque" art prevailed, with more colorful and adorned patterns.
At the end of the 19th century, the "Rococo" style came into fashion, with shells and ornamental volutes being typical of the period.
In the early 1900s, we had the final phase of the "Bauernmalerei" which, in Austria and Germany, was called "Biedermaier", corresponding to the "Art Nuveau" that influenced the arts at that time.
The influences of the "Bauernmalerei" persist to this day and, even today, we can appreciate the paintings of flowers, fruits, animals and the most varied themes decorating objects of daily use, furniture, pictures, and even residential houses.
The great museums of Germany and Switzerland exhibit rich collections of "Bauernmalerei" from all eras, of invaluable value and the style serves as inspiration for artists from all over the world.
Regionally there are varieties of styles such as: Tolzer, Rossler, Wismut, Hessian, Franconian, and Black Forest for example. They present characteristics that vary from the most primitive, through florals, ancient costumes, scenes of animals and peasants, fruit baskets, hearts, swirls, chest decorations, monochromatic, to the most elaborate.
The material: the real
According to sculptor Ingrid Thaler, the Bauernmalerei painting process generally comprises a few basic steps and describes some of the work required for painting on wood:
“You need to choose the correct wood. First it needs to be sanded. After sanding it is necessary to remove all the dust from the piece. Then the first coat of transparent sealer is applied which has the function of waterproofing the pores. Then you can apply one or two more coats of sealer as needed. Only then is the first coat of paint applied in the color that will cover the background. But depending on the case there is a need for two or three more coats of paint to ensure the perfect fit. Then the drawing is done. You paint the little flowers which sometimes have up to four colors, and that is what will give the piece its beauty. After all it is still necessary to pass the matte varnish to close, to seal the paintwork, to protect the overall paintwork. The work as a whole requires all these steps and takes a good amount of time to work. That is a complex process that takes time to do until you have the piece truly ready. Therefore it is always important to assess the added value it will have.”
The pioneer of the art of the Bauernmalerei in Dreizehnlinden was the award-winning artist, teacher of ceramics and painting from Rio de Janeiro, Mrs. Mariana Paiva Werneck Machado, who among so many attributes also played piano and harmonica. She was married to lawyer Aureliano de Souza Werneck Machado. Werneck as he was known by his friends was a lawyer and spoke English and French. The family of Maria Silvane and Ludovico Fiedler residents of Dreizehnlinden were very close friends of the Werneck couple and they say that after the Wernecks retired in Rio de Janeiro, they met Dreizehnlinden were enchanted with the peace and beauty of the place. They moved there in the early 1990s. Another reason that may have contributed to that decision, may have been the similarity of the place with the Austrian countryside where the couple had already traveled. Living in Dreizehnlinden they began a new phase in their lives: they devoted themselves to art. Silvane tells that, for example, the beautiful typical house they built for their home had the interior doors already planned to receive the painting, and the detail of the hearts on the green windows was a small sample of how much they were passionate about delicate art. They were very discreet and had the habit of listening classical music on vinyl records throughout the day. With regard to artistic work he was usually the one who acquired, prepared and painted the background of the pieces, so that she could finish with the artistic painting. During the period they lived there until Mariana`s death in 1998, they traveled a lot and for long periods of time in Europe, and they always returned marveling at the experiences they had there. As one of the good memories Silvane says that Mariana was in Paris for a long time and that she visited the Louvre Museum every day. Regarding the painting technique in Bauenmalerei style, Mariana has already brought some pieces painted in Rio de Janeiro. The taste for this type of painting technique may also have been inspired by their trips to the interior of Austria. She sold her works in her atelier located at the bottom of her residence.
I am moved to hear the words of Mrs. Regia Lucia Moser when she says: “I love that little transparent apron on that painting done by Mariana Werneck”. One can see the admiration she continues to have for the artist`s work, in this case, referring to a “little plaque” commissioned for his company, the Chocolate Treze Tílias. The work was carried out on an oval-shaped walnut wood plate with the company`s name painted in the center, in white Gothic style, in contrast to the dark brown background of the wood itself, inserted in an art as if it were embroidery superimposed on a small rectangular lace tablecloth. On the sides there is a stylized Tyrolean couple: on the left a man wearing a Lederhosen and a green jacket, holding in one hand a rod decorated with flowers and ribbons, and in the other a cage with a bird; on the right a woman, also holding an identical rod in one hand, and in the other a wicker basket with flowers. She wears a pink dress overlaid by a traditional white, a transparent apron which reveals a little of the white embroidery on the bottom of her skirt. The plate is surrounded by a band painted predominantly in gold, richly filled with small flower arrangements: roses, tulips, etc.
This plaque is important because it was Mariana`s first Bauernmalerei painting in Dreizehnlinden and it is also considered the 1st painting in Bauernmalerei of the city. Aureliano contributed ideas and worked on preparing the piece before it was finally painted. After the death of Mariana her husband started to make artistic paintings as well. The first piece he made entirely was a wooden clock whose front face is painted with a bluish patina, and in the center where the hour and minute markers are a white circle with the numbers in Roman numerals. He sold numerous works at Malharia Edelweiss, a store owned by Mrs. Silvane Fiedler. He passed away in Dreizehnlinden in 2014.
Regarding the Bauernmalerei painting works by the Werneck couple, the sculptor Ingrid Thaler highlights the differentiated style of painting, highlighting especially the beauty of the colors of the backgrounds of the pieces. Mrs. Silvane, on the other hand, is moved when confiding that: “The Bauernmalerei decorates our houses and harmonizes with our style, which has a lot of wood, and adds a color that harmonizes with the whole environment. And if you look at the colors, it`s the colors of nature that you bring into the house. Is very beautiful!"

Mariana and Aureliano Werneck are thus considered the forerunners of painting in Bauernmalerei in Dreizehnlinden. But over the years other local professionals have also developed this technique as is the case of the artist Cláudia Unterberger Gratt. Cláudia reports that she makes Bauer herself: “From a request from my aunt Amália, I started painting some wooden things that my grandfather, José Unterberger Filho, made. Then I started to paint a little, then I got into Bauer`s part and I really liked it. There was a time when my father made the dishes for me: he turned the dishes and I painted. He worked with wood, then he made the dishes. I painted and over time I perfected the technique more and more. I like painting the typical flowers the most: the Edelweis is one of them.” About Cláudia`s work, the sculptor Ingrid Thaler points out: “The amount of color tones she uses is impressive. Cláudia`s painting work is beautiful, super detailed!”.
Mrs. Maria Tereza Pattis Scharf also paints works in Bauernmalerei. She says that she learned it in one of the classes of a painting course she took in São Paulo, which was not specifically from Bauer. She brought the technique to Dreizehnlinden. Then together with her sister-in-law Luciana Pernlochner Pattis, she started buying books. Maria Tereza always wanted to teach. And when she came to live in Dreizehnlinden in 1996 she started teaching Luciana, Cecília Pattis Hartmann, Matilde de Ros and her daughter Lilian Scharf Falchetti. The course was interrupted for some time and after their children were older, around 2002 and 2003, the course continued with Luciana and Cecília again, and Leandra Junge Thaler. Then, for family reasons, the course was interrupted for about 17 or 18 years, and it currently takes place in her own residence and has weekly meetings and the participation of artists: Luciana, Cecília, Leandra, Frederica Gwiggner and Mônica Carmen Nesi Anrain.
Maria Tereza considers that the color of the Bauermalerei brings joy to the surroundings and she feels very happy that there are paintings like this in the city. About the history of this art she recalls that around the 16th century peasants in the alpine region began to paint objects. But they did not have many resources neither financial nor infrastructure or technique. They always painted the same flowers: little roses, little flowers and everything in the shape of a comma. Still according to her it is said that the origin of Bauer is inspired by the houses of the wealthiest people, which the peasants admired a lot, mainly because they had the entire outline drawn on the windows, and they wanted to do it at their house too. They started painting imitating those paintings and ended up creating something very original: the Bauernmalerei. As they were very poor they took unused objects such as: rusty cans, hot irons, wooden sticks, watering cans, old trunks, and anything that was really useless and no longer useful. They revitalized these pieces by painting them. She comments that there are many types of Bauer, for example: the classics and the most elaborate according to the personal style of each artist. Usually in Brazil they do it in two colors: white with another color to the right and identically to the left, and so on; blending the colors to give an idea of a certain depth. In Austrian magazines, she observes that the paintings are very beautiful: “they have more shadow and light, are much more elaborate and are integrated with landscapes”, style, in a certain way, predominant in Dreizehnlinden. She remembers the work she made for the dining room of her daughter Beate Cristine Scharf Fleck`s home, which she considers one of her masterpieces. There are four paintings with landscapes representing the four seasons of the year: Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring. She also points out that with painting in Bauermalerei people can do everything they can imagine including, for example, restoring an old piece of furniture at home and making it very beautiful.
At Atelier Pattis you will find exclusive works of sculpture and Bauermalerei paintings. Luciana Pernlochner Pattis and her husband Germano Pattis are the owners and work their children Andressa and Victor. Luciana reveals that she tries to study a lot mainly the frequency of colors and that these lead to a greater harmony with nature. In her own words:
“In our work we manage to do something different and the decoration brings that energy, the art. The art is fantastic so you can balance it there, why not? I study a lot the frequency of colors, all the elementals of nature and how to balance them like this one here: wood with stone, you work the balance: wood warms and crystal cools, so you put the two together, the balance. They are small details, points that I really like. I try to transfer some of these stories to the pieces, that is they bring good energy to whoever they are in their homes”.
“When I am creating the pieces, they talk to me. Mainly “defined” pieces, wooden trunks that nature defines, they are unique pieces and so you have to talk to them. When it`s a defined wood or even something that`s exclusive like watches. They follow the same idea each watch is a wooden cutout. I love doing this because there`s an energy in everyone, there`s no repetition. You will always dialogue with it and establish what fits there and what does not interfere with the appointment, that does not disturb the functionality of the object but that complements it”.
“Ideas emerge, there is no rationality involved. There is a connection between you and the object. It seems to me that the logical part and the non-logical part come together: you fit the shapes together and everything happens. As we work as a team then we exchange some ideas. I am the one who most seeks to fill in the empty spaces, while Germano and Andressa prefer pieces with fewer elements”.
“Regarding the reuse of objects and things that are no longer useful such as old pieces, first of all you need to clean the piece: physically and energetically. That`s because it already brought a story and that story can be fantastic and the energy stays, or the story wasn`t so good, so you need to neutralize it, because it goes to someone else`s house. So whenever it`s a piece for restoration you have to take care of it: you need to clear this field to leave it at zero for another family. Restoration always has this process, and therefore you have to see if it`s worth it because it has a high cost: you have to put it in the balance to see if it`s worth the investment”.
“Bauermalerei in addition to bring colors, brings an energy of joy that is its essence. For Dreizehnlinden it fits in well because many works are made of wood and the city already has a characteristic of using wood in architecture and objects. In this sense Bauer ends up making a positive contribution to the prevailing art because in the case of here, sculpture is already very widespread, so the color matches the painting very well. These are two points that come together very well”.
“It is interesting that I was never very attached to finished works. I don`t have that feeling of attachment. I love when people identify with what I do. I am very happy when someone likes it and takes the work with them.”
Still on the flowers she usually paints in addition to roses and other alpine country flowers, Luciana gives special emphasis to the most emblematic of them: the Edelweiss. In works with these paintings or even using real flowers she applies a sticker on the back side of the piece with an explanatory text authored by her sister-in-law Hilda Pattis with the following content:
“Edelweiss is originally from the European Alps, grows in rocks generally at an altitude of between 1,700 and 3,400 meters above sea level. Edelweiss became known in the world because of music and is considered the true flower of love, because someone risked their own life climbing mountains to harvest it. It does not wither and does not die, and remains the same for over 100 years. That`s why we only gift Edelweiss to someone very special.”
The immaterial: the imaginary
Recalling the alpine populations of about two centuries ago the Bauernmalerei paintings, among other forms of handicrafts, were part of the daily lives of families. It was one of the artistic forms that had the result of rescuing into homes especially in the winter months, some of the colors and figurations of nature lost during those periods due to the cold and snow. It was also a way of emulating a certain additional warmth in the monotonous coexistence that people had in restricted shared environments. Within a repetitive routine of work activities handicraft ended up having some functions such as: ornamentation, artistic expression, filling people`s idle time and in a more individual-oriented sense the organization of thoughts and emotions.
As mentioned once by my friend Carlos Eduardo Rohrer Felder (Pubi), an engineer and businessman in Dreizehnlinden, about the Bauernmalerei, he summarized: “The Bauernmalerei beautifies the place where you live”. This reality is part of his life and his family`s traditions who even descends from ancestors pioneer colonizers coming from Austria. Both in his residence and in his brewery, Stube Treze Tílias, we find pieces decorated with these paintings embellishing some environments. The harmony that these objects add to the spaces makes up a differentiated composition of: colors, textures, volumes, lights, shadows, perspectives, different geometric dispositions, etc, in truly original and unique works, whether they are made in new, restored or re-signified pieces. The Buernmalerei is found in homes and businesses in various branches of activity in Dreizehnlinden, but also in other cities in the state and country. In Santa Catarina especially in cities colonized by European immigrants from the Alps region, such as in the Itajaí River Valley it is possible to find this type of handicraft more frequently.
It is interesting to think that this form of artistic expression continues to be produced (and marketed) even today in an environment that is very different from its origins: other places, other cultures and in another time. Why does it continue to exist? We could immediately imagine that a good reason for this would be attributed to the undeniable uniqueness and beauty of the paintings on the pieces, which they certainly are. But reflecting a little more we observe that other deeper reasons may exist. For example what strikes me are the motifs that are portrayed in the works: flowers and figurations with scenes from alpine daily life, maintaining the same fundamentals that originally inspired the technique. They are images that are no longer part of the present everyday life, but because they are art they truly express beauty through an idealized past reality. A reality that also refers to the land where they lived and where their ancestors, the colonizing immigrants, left. What imaginary would be behind this context?
In his work “A Instituição Imaginária da Sociedade” (translation: The Imaginary Institution of Society), the French philosopher of Greek origin, economist and psychoanalyst Cornelius Castoriadis brings us his vision of what he calls the “Social Imaginary”. For him the “Imaginary” is the human psyche. And that this imagination within a process of socialization which manifests itself through representations that cannot be determined in any way, and which will constitute what he calls the “Social Imaginary”, where a collective already participates. This collective will be anonymous. It will not depend on a single person and will institute new things which will take shape and crystallize, in many times depositing previous imaginaries. This is the result of a collective (social and anonymous work) it does not have a formal logic, and will characterize the “Social History”, which is what it really allows us to be and what it allows us to do: it is the product of human work and its results. Also, specifically regarding creation:
What to say about the passages where Plato affirms, contrary to what he says about other points of view and the position that we impute to all traditional ontology, that there is creation (poiésis) and that this is “cause of the direction of the non-being to being”, what “conducts a non-being before a “stay” (ousia) ulterior”?... Plato observes that it is customary to unduly restrict the terms “creator” and “creation” (poiétés, poiésis ) to what is only a part of “poietics” (that which concerns “music and matter”), when all work subject to an art (techné) is truly “poietic”, and the craftsmen who carry it out are all “creators” - poiétai. But what does this work consist of, and what is a techné? In what is a craftsman a craftsman, and as such a creator? To the extent that it gives a formless piece of matter its form, its eidos (and here we can use the language of Plato or Aristotle indifferently, because Aristotle, in this regard, only needs and develops to the extreme Plato`s thought). It is this eidos, this form that makes the wood the table, the bronze the statue, the vase. Now bronze is bronze whatever its form. But the statue is a statue, like a statue, only because of its form; his statue-being, his essence, is his eidos. Saying, therefore, that we created the statue (ontologically) only makes sense if we say (which is true, at least for the sculptor who does not copy or from it) that we create the eidos of this statue, that we create eidos. We only make the statue as a statue and like this statue if we invent, imagine, if we establish its eidos from nothing, if we print an already given eidos to a piece of bronze, we are only repeating what, essentially, as essence-eidos, was already there, we are not creating anything, we are imitating, we produce. Conversely, if we “manufacture” an another eidos, we do more than just “produce”, we create. (Free translation from Portuguese version of the book).
So where do the inspirations that move craftsmen to create such works come from? In his 2005 Thesis “O Sofrimento de Imigrantes“ (The Suffering of Immigrants - free translation), Jorge Fouad Maalouf comments:
Between emigrating and immigrating there is an ocean of sea, barriers, different codes, temperatures, languages, customs, ways of being. Crossing this ocean is not easy, it is not enough for the ship to arrive, nor for the train to lead to temporary accommodation. Re-rooting may or may not occur. (Free translation from Portuguese version of the Thesis).
And he cites the text by professor and clinical psychologist Gilberto Safra (2004), regarding the understanding of the Self and the roots of immigration:
The transgenerational question refers not only to the past, but also to the future, insofar as it moves towards what is not yet, because human beings carry potentialities of being. Here again appears the need to paradoxically understand the human condition, in the human and beyond it. In ethnic objects there is a specific type of transitional object, insofar as they are objects that connect the person with their ethnicity: presence of self, presence of ancestors, of others, reconnecting the person with their origin.
(Free translation from Portuguese version of the Thesis).
In this sense, I wonder if there are transgenerational characteristics in our works, creations or artistic expressions? Would we (including artisans) be the conductors of some potentiality that alludes to (unconscious) desires inherited from our ancestors? It is true that migrating leaves its marks: the rupture with the origin, the hopes and despair, the fears and uncertainties, the longing, the losses, the adaptation, the new life, the impossibility of returning. A real process that, even though the results and overcoming challenges are promising, do not prevent unrealized dreams and desires from becoming latent. I do not doubt that these sentiments, in some form, were transmitted to their children, and that they, in the same way, transmitted them to theirs, and so on, reaching the present day through all of us. After all, how many generations have passed since then? Four, five, six?
The passage of time certainly eases the hardships experienced. I believe it makes sense to consider that in the colonizers` imagination, the passage of time has, in some way, softened the harsh memories of the homeland: perhaps with more colors, or even, good memories rescued. The “re-rooting” in subtropical lands established a new Heimat, a new homeland: it gave rise to a new environment. Adapting to the new environment and to other immigrants required mutual concessions and renegotiations, as well as the establishment of new bonds and interdependencies. The scenario was outlined as a consequence of these movements, and new significant elements came to exist and integrate into the landscape, configuring themselves as visible forms of society: what identifies them, what is their identity. Regarding this theme, I mention the following excerpt from the article “Memória coletiva, identidade e colonização” (Collective memory, identity and colonization - free translation) by Brazilian historian and anthropologist Giralda Seyfert:
The notion of identity has a long history in the field of social sciences and psychology and here it is interesting to register its conjunction with ethnicity. Weber (1991) was one of the first social scientists to add ethnic awareness to the experience of migration, highlighting their sense of belonging to a community or collectivity, without naturalizing the symbolic difference. This leads back to the later discussion on ethnic identity, treated as a social construction that produces effects in the lives of individuals and collectivities. There are several ways of thinking about ethnicity - including analytically - but I think it is more useful (for the purpose proposed here) to retain only one of its multiple facets: that which concerns the forms of representation and action that support ethnic identity through the perception of ethnicity. cultural distinctiveness. This identity is collective, assuming the recognition of belonging to a group or collectivity, and individual, because it means the person in society. Identity, like memory, cannot be entirely detached from the objective reality that underpins it. Hence the necessary initial reference to the formation of ethnicities in the context of colonization. (Free translation from Portuguese version of the book).
The beauty and the presence of the sacred
As well as the sculptures, carvings and bell towers, for example, I think of the Bauernmalerei painting as an element that integrates the identity of Dreizehnlinden inhabitants. Identity is one of the manifest forms of social consciousness. It has to do with bonds of belonging: belonging to the same group, the same community, the same codes, the same roots, the same history, the same beliefs, the same God... an art form that brings to the visible the beauty.
About this theme I close this work remembering the documentary Why Beauty Matters?, conducted by the British philosopher Sir Roger Scruton: an essay about the abandonment of beauty in the arts and culture contemporary life, and the indispensability of rescuing it in its essence. In a certain part of this documentary (>38m20s) we observe the following reflection:
”From Plato to Kant, philosophers have tried to capture the peculiar way in which beauty dauwns us, like a sudden ray of sunlight, or a surge of love. For Plato, the only explanation of such an experience was its transcendental origin, it speak to us, like the voice of God. And Kant too, in a much more sober way, believes that experiencing beauty connects us with the ultimate mystery of been. Through beauty we are brought into the presence of the sacred.”
Let us then make the beauty our colors, our movements and our rhythms!

Title:Ho`oponopono Description: Blue sphere representing the globe, sunflower flowers painted with the Bauernmalerei technique and phrases from the mantra Ho`oponopono. Ho`oponopono is a prayer or mantra composed of four short phrases which are part of a healing technique that comes from ancient Hawaiian wisdom. In the local language, Ho`o means healing and ponopono means tidying up, correcting. The practice serves to purify the body and get rid of bad memories or feelings, which hold the mind in a negative tune. Behind every situation, every event and every encounter that takes place in life, a memory is kept. The purpose of Ho`oponopono is to release memories that could pose obstacles in a person`s life or be a source of pain, grief or suffering. The modern practice of Ho`oponopono consists of four main phrases: I`m sorry (You take responsibility for the acts of your life); Forgive me (You ask forgiveness to yourself and to God); I love you (You reconnect with love and allow it to flow into your life); I am grateful (You are grateful and confident that the matter will be resolved for the greater good of all).
