Santa Isabel colony: images of a past still present

It is undeniable that the passage of time leaves its marks, and that the facts and stories that follow one another, little by little, form another great story: the History of Humanity. There are countless factors that influence and determine the course of this process, just as the ways in which we can look at the records left behind are inexhaustible.
Emigrations, immigrations, migrations, human movements are part of this context. The exodus imposed by circumstances and the movement beyond borders: each departure and each arrival makes a journey, an origin and a destination, losses and gains. For those who stay, there remains the absence, the vacuum, the reconstruction of life and things, and the tenuous hope that one day, in the future, time will help ease the pain that remains. For those who leave a divided heart goes with it: if on the one hand it accompanies a feeling of emptiness, sadness and pain, on the other, it follows the hope and determination to find something better for themselves and those close to them. There were many uncertainties on this journey. The idealized reality of the new homeland, today we know, fell far short of the promises and dreams. When our ancestors arrived here they had little knowledge about the reality that awaited them. They had dreams and few belongings in their luggage. But the truth is that the greatest good they brought was not just in the objects, it was in the strength, the honor, the dignity they possessed within themselves. They had to establish themselves within a new culture, with other rules, another language, other habits, other customs. They needed to integrate into an environment completely different from their own and deal with people from the most diverse backgrounds. It was necessary to adapt to a lifestyle completely different from the one they had imagined, in exchange for a piece of land that could now be theirs, but of course, paid with his and her own work.
The new relief, soil, climate, fauna and flora, tools and utensils, were just part of the necessary adaptation to the new and unknown environment. Language, interpersonal relationships, habits and customs, illnesses were an integral part of this phase. Virgin forest, insects, venomous animals were part of the scenery to be explored. There was no way back, the only alternative was to face the challenge of the early days, even without adequate tools, food or medicine often. The know-how brought in the luggage was not always enough to meet the demands. Family, union, strength, work and faith were fundamental inputs in the reconstruction of a new life. Difficult times, but they were certainly part of the reality experienced by many of our colonizing ancestors of Santa Catarina and Brazil.
The reflection made by the character Jakob in the German film “Heimat – Chronicle of a Nostalgia”, starting at 49min27s, is significant:
It is not appropriate for me to speak of deprivations. I have legs to take me wherever my head wants, instead of waiting, obeying and keeping quiet. When I go one day to see the New World I won't take junk with me like everyone else, cluttered with their supplies and tools and even pallets and chamber pots. How false thei vision of the New World is. We should not transform it into the image of our pain but into the reflection of our dreams. I want to take nothing with me other than the knowledge of all those who have already walked this path before me and recorded what happened to them in books. For everything can be lost, sunk into the depths by a storm. But not what we know in our hearts. (Translation from the Portuguese subtitle)
A thought that dealt with a possible imaginary of his that would precede the epic Atlantic crossing. A crossing that represents the physical break with its origins. Certainly what happened was arrival, adaptation, and the passage of time, however, between each of these stages there were an infinite number of overcomings.
After a few years, the sound of cart wheels bringing their belongings echoed in the distance. Most likely the longing for the homeland persisted but little by little it was sharing space with the new world under construction: the new Heimat. Food grew from the ground: cassava, corn, fruits, vegetables; from the animals came: meat, lard, milk, eggs, leather, sometimes the driving force. Commerce and techniques were improving, and tools little by little introduced dynamism to the processes: water wheels, mills, etc.
Lutheran or Catholic, religiosity has always been the safe haven to express pain, joy and renewal of faith. It was the point of convergence and comfort and, a place of union and support to regain the strength necessary to face the harsh fate that life had in store for them. During the festivities it was possible to celebrate some of the gastronomy that the land already allowed them to obtain. The music, songs and dances referred to the traditions brought. Children, children`s children, children`s grandchildren came.
In his 2005 thesis, MAALOUF quotes Gilberto Safra:
The ethnic register presents sensorial and cultural characteristics that characterize a certain people, a certain community, for example, smell, taste, color, rhythm. In it we find the most fundamental elements in the constitution of oneself. It is the most resistant record and keeps the memory of the place that was a person`s original home. In this record, the place is the self.
From his own reflections MAALOUF adds:
In ethnic objects there is a specific type of transitional object that connect the person with their ethnicity, the presence of themselves, the presence of ancestors, of others reconnecting the person with their origin.
In the reports of the “Diary of the immigrant Mathias Schmitz” we find situations experienced by him, his family and other immigrants, from leaving Löffelscheid in Hunsrück, Germany, until the to arrival to Brazil. Herr Schmitz begins by mentioning that: “Many of the emigrants shed bitter tears when saying goodbye to relatives and friends, as it was goodbye forever”, and goes on to describe facts and events on the journey to the port city of Dunkirk, in France. He tells in great detail, the orders and abuses of the crew, and the immense difficulties suffered by the passengers during the ship journey which lasted six weeks to Rio de Janeiro. Furthermore, it reports on the additional ten days they remained on board until they were released for disembarkation in the “small town, Praia Grande, which was in front of Rio”, and the subsequent negotiations to release the luggage, negotiations for the reception and destination of the group of Germans. He highlights the two meetings he had with Emperor Dom Pedro II, the way in which the misfortune immigrants found themselves was resolved, and the choice of the Santa Catarina lands as their final destination. The “Diary” also contains information about the sailboat trip to the Province of Santa Catarina and the events that took place until the arrival in the expected land.
This detailed report is “breathtaking”. It portrays details of facts, difficulties and includes setbacks faced by immigrants such as extortion attempts by dishonest traders, revealing the immense challenges experienced by our colonizing ancestors. A sad reality that required great overcoming and constituted a difficult chapter in the epic history of our colonization.
In his 2005 thesis in Clinical Psychology MAALOUF reflects on migration:
Between emigrating and immigrating there is an ocean of sea, of barriers, of different codes, temperatures, languages, customs, ways of being. Crossing this ocean is not easy, it is not enough for the ship to arrive nor for the train to drive to temporary accommodation. Rooting again may or may not occur.
These are certainly aspects that make up the panorama of a given place and time. From MACHADO we have:
When we deepen our look at the identity universe of a people we can, for example, observe more clearly the signs that characterize that culture. These signs are distinguished from others because they are subjectively elements of connection between people and the ethnicity to which they belong. They are transmitted from generation to generation, and shared within a group or even an entire society, however they are only capable of existing through their individuals. (...). They symbolically represent depository images of a latent ethnic identity safeguarding over time cultural values that reconnect people to their roots.
In the case of colonizing immigrants the signs can also be augmented by factors related to adaptation and external influences. For example environmental conditions interfere with the way of life and the application of knowledge brought from the homeland and therefore interfere with its culture and vice versa. In the same way the new social dynamics, the coexistence with people from other origins, in some way influences the original identity: everything contributed to what was until then, in a certain way continuing to exist even in another form. The know-how was therefore adapted to local conditions, but in essence it remained alive underlying everyday life and culture, including through descendants. A story that began 175 years ago, since the first group of approximately 250 German immigrants, Catholics and Lutherans, arrived in Loeffelscheidt, Rio dos Bugres and Linha Bauer.
Historical foundations
It was the second to half of the 19th century and there was need to establish an interconnection between Desterro and Lages. This would facilitate communication, agriculture, transport and trade between the highlands and the coast.
In historical literature we have records of some relevant facts about the first years of the formation of Santa Isabel Colony. JOCHEM tells us that:
The troops who came with their products from Lages to sell them in Desterro were constantly exposed to forestry who, in order to survive, robbed and mistreated passersby. To alleviate this situation and establish some settlements along the “Path of the Troops”, the Imperial Government authorized, in 1847, the foundation of Santa Isabel Colony located on the Bugres river, a tributary of the Cubatão river, above Colônia Vargem Grande, (...).
JOCHEM adds:
The road to Lages had its route definitively changed to Vale do Cubatão in 1845, with the completion of the so-called “Imperial Caminho”, thus transferring all traffic along this new route as well easier and less painful.
This path after Sacramento Farm initially followed the watershed and passed close to the Loeffelscheidt cemetery, from there it continued along Rio dos Bugres valley. Later to contemplate Teresópolis Colony, founded in 1860, another branch was opened even further to the south. And over time new accessions with many variants were created.
Dedicated for many years to research on German colonization in the Greater Florianópolis region, historian Toni Jochem has several literary works on the subject. In September 2023 he gave me an exclusive interview in which he commented on important points, which I present some excerpts below:
The road to Lages initially when the Colony was founded followed the watershed after Sacramento Farm, which is the Neves family farm. Once Sacramento Farm was finished, Santa Isabel Colony began through which the road to Lages followed, on whose banks plots of land were distributed to immigrants. Along the way is the Catholic Church of Loeffelscheidt. Going down the hill when the road to Lages passes through Rio dos Bugres where the Lutheran Church was built, and the Colony Headquarter was established.
About the formation of the first population nucleus of Santa Isabel Colony BRUCH comments:
In 1847 a colonial nucleus was established in Santa Catarina by a group of approximately 250 German, Catholic and Lutheran immigrants. It was named in honor of the Princess Isabel, daughter of the Emperor Dom Pedro II. Initially they were settled in lots along the new route of the road designed for Lages, through the Cubatão River Valley, going up the watershed from the Coronel Joaquim Xavier Neves farm and going down to Rio dos Bugres valley.
The founding immigrants began to settle in the location that was later called Loeffelscheidt, entering the valley of Rio dos Bugres (Bugerbach) and another location adjacent to the first two, called Bauer Line (Bauerslinie).
The formation of these three locations, which took place in 1847, characterizes a first important moment in the colonization of Santa Isabel. A second moment will occur with the arrival of more immigrants from 1860 onwards which leads to the need to expand the Colony and the creation of new “colonial lines”. Since then many facts and events have taken place and formed a history that is now 175 years old.
SEYFERTH describes characteristics of settlements in colonial areas:
Some peculiar characteristics marked the settlement in areas of foreign colonization in the south of the country. The peculiarities derive in part from the fact that this settlement followed river valleys which in turn served as the first route of communication with the coast. (...). A main trail opened in the forest served as a starting point for the demarcation of the first lots, elongated, parallel to each other on both sides of the trail facing it. The trails constituted the main colonial lines and served as the first route of penetration. Perpendicular to them the indents were opened where lots were demarcated in the same way. Bites and dashes in general accompanied waterways. The occupation of colonial areas was thus determined by the relief itself and the elongated lots allowed a more or less rational distribution of land including with regard to floodplains and water supply. It should be noted however that the settlement carried out in this way was not spontaneous but determined by the State`s colonization policy.
From the aforementioned interview with historian Toni Jochem, I also highlight:
We must take into account that Santa Isabel Colony had two very distinct moments I would say unmistakable: the first is when it was founded in 1847 and the second occurs with the arrival of new settlers in the 1860s, with the need for its physical expansion and as a result with the regulation of the respective colonial nucleus. It is important to note that in 1847 the First Line was made up of three locations: Loeffelscheidt, Rio dos Bugres and Linha Bauer. From 1860 onwards with the arrival of new immigrants its physical expansion took place with the founding of new colonial lines.
Another interesting fact is that later there was a fragmentation of the Colony. Over time it was realized that the center of geographic convergence of the colony and the flow of paths took place in the town of Rancho Queimado. Then in 1919 the city council of Palhoça which, from 1894, had jurisdiction over the territory of Santa Isabel Colony, decided to transfer the headquarters of the District of Santa Isabel – created in 1902 – there, the district headquarters changed but its name remained the same. Later there was another law changing the name from “Santa Isabel District” to “Rancho Queimado District”. Later, part of the territorial part of the then District of Rancho Queimado was emancipated, forming the municipality of Rancho Queimado, another part integrated the Municipality of Águas Mornas and, even to a minimum extent, the municipalities of Angelina and São Pedro de Alcântara.
A vision of the beginnings of the old Santa Isabel Colony was narrated by the German doctor Robert Avé-Lallemant. He lived and worked in Rio de Janeiro from 1836 to 1859. His explorations in the interior of Brazil resulted in writings including his passage through the southern region of the country. His impressions were recorded in the two-volume book: “Viagem pelo Sul do Brasil no ano de 1858” (Journey through the South of Brazil in the year 1858). This book describes the exploratory trip he took between Lages and Desterro, which contains the passage through the Cubatão river valley and some situations from his stay in Santa Isabel.
A noisy stream, the Bugres river entered the forest, we discovered traces of culture left and right, in the hills, fresh and full of life culture! Through the twilight houses shone: we were in the lowlands of Santa Catarina where the modest and honorable agricultural profession is practiced, where peaceful peasants gathered in a colony. (...).
The Rio dos Bugres valley has beautiful and wild charms. High hills rise around the noisy stream on both sides of which individual colonies rise and spread. They still offer the appearance of cultures that have just begun. You can still see half-charred tree trunks as a decade doesn't rot them, stumps with roots can still be seen just removed, the picture is not yet clean and pleasing to the European taste, but vigorous, solid, prosperous (...).
We spoke with several settlers. Everyone was visibly happy, I didn`t meet a single one who didn`t feel perfectly satisfied in the strange land. Furthermore children were swarming everywhere. (...). AVÉ-LALLEMANT (1953, Vol. 2, p. 115-119).
These are impressions that portray the scenario found by Avé-Lallemant in the genesis of the Colony. Almost two centuries later certainly have a somewhat changed scenario. In search of images that spoke a little about this perspective I went through each of the old “Lines”, recording in photographs, testimonies and impressions, different aspects bequeathed by the immigrant colonizer of the region. More than documenting the historical, cultural aspects and their nuances such as adaptation and influences, I propose that in this work we also reflect on the passage of time. A time that holds within it the original ideals and their evolution through the generations. A time that remains alive in the existing material and immaterial heritage and that contains the dreams realized and those left along the way as well as the imaginary that underlies what moves and is manifested in the present time. As pointed out by MAALOUF: “The transgenerational issue refers not only to the past, but also to the future, insofar as it sets itself in motion towards what is not yet because the human being carries the potential to be.”
Through the “Lines” of the old Colony
In Santa Catarina, Santa Isabel Colony was the oldest Lutheran colony and one of the first established in the then Province now the State. In the year in which we celebrate the 175th anniversary of its foundation, I pay tribute here by inviting the reader to walk with me the paths that were once part of this colony. In this work I make an excursion through the “Lines” of the old Santa Isabel Colony with photographic records of my own from its Headquarter. Continuing on I continue in the West direction visiting each of the “Lines” in the region heading to the town of Taquaras. A walk through nooks, crannies and charms, in which I direct my gaze to the historical and cultural legacy of the physical space existing in the region:
- First Line - Santa Isabel: it was the headquarter of the Colony and currently belongs to the municipality of Águas Mornas, SC. In the past it was known as Rio dos Bugres, and together with Loeffelscheidt and Bauer Line it was part of the First Line of Santa Isabel Colony;
- First Line - Loeffelscheidt: located in the municipality of Águas Mornas it has a bucolic and exuberant nature with altitudes that can reach 700 meters in height. A large part of the population descends from immigrants from Hunsrück, Germany, who still maintain traditions from their ancestors;
- First Line - Bauer Line: located in the municipality of Águas Mornas, SC, it also has a bucolic and exuberant nature with rugged terrain. Bauer Line was one of the first evangelical communities in Santa Catarina and a large part of the population descends from immigrants from Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany;
- Second Line: is located in Águas Mornas, SC, a region whose surroundings have a landscape of unique scenic beauty. It was colonized by Germans re-emigrated from Thuringia called as “Kaffeepflücker” (Coffee Pickers);
- Third Line: located between the municipalities of Angelina, SC (most of it) and Rancho Queimado, SC (only a small part), it is the place where a large part of the Luxembourgers of Santa Isabel Colony settled;
- Fourth Line: located between the municipalities of Angelina, SC (70%), and São Pedro de Alcântara, SC (30%), it is a bucolic place with few houses and great scenic beauty;
- Fifth Line - Scharf Line: also known as Scharf Line, is located in the municipality of Rancho Queimado, SC. The region has a landscape of great beauty and several residences built with traces of Germanic architecture brought by the colonizers;
- Sixth Line - Rio Antinhas: also known as “Rio Embiras” is located in the municipality of Águas Mornas, SC, an area with few residences, with some agricultural activities and exuberant nature;
- Rancho Queimado - Headquarter: from a troop overnight stop, the municipality of Rancho Queimado, SC, currently has 3,279 inhabitants (according to senso of 2022) but continues to be a place that preserves traditions, beautiful landscapes and buildings;
- Rio Bonito: belongs to the municipality of Rancho Queimado, SC, and is located halfway between the center of Rancho Queimado and the Taquaras neighborhood. It is a bucolic place with beautiful landscapes and old houses;
- Taquaras: is located on the outskirts of Boa Vista Highland. It has a lush transitional landscape made up of a nature full of streams, rivers and waterfalls that surround beautiful plains and mountains. It belongs to the municipality of Rancho Queimado, SC, and contains a significant number of historic buildings, monuments and flower gardens; and the
- Boa Vista Highland: it was an extension of Taquaras neighborhood and was located on the western limit of Santa Isabel Colony. With an altitude of 1,250 meters above sea level it is located on the banks of the BR 282 highway. It is located on a plateau delimited by a long sloping rock wall. It was part of the troop route and has housed a set of telecommunications antennas for many years. More recently a viewpoint made up of a glass walkway has been implemented which will allow you to observe the entire panorama of the region, especially valleys and mountains that were also part of the old Colony.
Collections, memories, traditions and aspects of everyday life
I also include in this work visits to collections, memories, traditions and some aspects of daily life bequeathed by the colonizing immigrants of Santa Isabel Colony: an insight into cultural elements that have been maintained over time, which retain the strength and marks of a past time and which are inherently reflected in the identity of their descendants. Furthermore, they bring us aspects of the history and culture existing in the region which refer to the collective memory; and that through what is real, they reveal an even greater pre-existing imagination, and which remains alive in people`s daily lives.
- Language: speaking, writing, words, names, phrases, expressions, poems and texts in the German language are commonly found, both in people`s daily lives and in public signs in the region. They reflect in the practice of the language/dialect family and collective values that remain incorporated in their lives, and that refer to the memory of their ancestors. Language links the individual`s identity to the group and origins, therefore, to the feeling of belonging. It is important because it also supports other ethnic experiences;
- Interior architecture: brought by German colonizing immigrants, the Germanic style adapted to local availability is still preserved in the construction forms and materials applied in constructions preserve the ancestral know-how that persists over time. Also in addition to the estimated value, period furniture holds personal, family, cultural and even historical souvenirs and memories. They form an important link between different eras, styles, materials, techniques, design, aesthetics, etc.;
- Habits and Customs: each object and each utensil has a function but also many stories attached to objects, utensils, ornaments, crafts, photographs that refer to memories and affections that remain retained over time. Ancient clothing also reflects aspects of people`s lives at a particular time. It brings together factors of a society such as: culture, style, techniques, needs, applications, habits and customs;
- In gardens, flowers in vases, gardens and portals make up the beauty of homes, churches, museums, places, etc. Likewise among the fruits, strawberries are the highlight with many plantations and numerous points of sale to consumers, as well as vegetables of very high quality are always present in various parts of the region.
- From the gastronomy preserved by the descendants of the colonizers I highlight the "cucas" (kind of cake baked in the oven usually low and rectangular, and the dough is made of eggs, wheat flour, butter and yeast): widely consumed and appreciated in the region. Some cucas recipes are part of the best family traditions: ethnic cuisine harks back to its origins;
- The movement called Tropeirismo: trade between highland and coast left its marks influencing habits, customs and people`s lives, including in the region of the Santa Isabel Colony;
- Strawberry Festival: valuing the Germanic culture of the region, since 1992 the Strawberry Festival has been held annually in the town of Taquaras. Valuing the traditions, identity and quality of the product that residents of the region have, fairs, exhibitions, parades, dance, music and lots of gastronomy are held. In 2023, the 30th Strawberry Festival took place from December 1st to 3rd.
- Tomb Art: is in itself a form of artistic expression characterized by representing feelings through symbolic images and their relationships with death and the construction of memories.
Final Considerations
An area of great beauty formed sometimes by green valleys sometimes by steep mountains, describes the extensive space that was occupied by Santa Isabel Colony. Even nowadays when we have countless roads to shorten distances it took several forays for me to be able to travel all the Lines of the region. There were many photographic records, interactions with people and learning. The experience of getting to know, experiencing, photographing and bringing together in images this vast heritage of Santa Catarina history surprised me.
Appreciating it as a whole allows us to see a little about the dimension of what was built and how much it still reflects what was the saga of colonization. Courage, determination and persistence, for example, were fundamental qualities to overcome the hardships imposed by nature. Family, union, traditions, cultural values, faith and religiosity were also essential for all of this to become viable. Today it is possible to notice how much the original ideals brought in the immigrant`s baggage have evolved and transformed over time.
It is noticeable that the foundations laid by previous generations continue to live on through their descendants. Adapting to the environment, living with the new reality the influence of other cultures, over time shaped the scenario we find today: a place that ended up becoming their new Heimat. Space where everything happened, where facts and events were chronologically integrated, and which also shaped the new identity which is projected into different aspects of the daily lives of their heirs.
A real testimony of how expressive the legacy of the immigrant colonizer was and how much it still exists and is projected in countless aspects of the daily life and identity of its descendants. They are truly images of a past that is still present and that still persist in time!
Pointing to the future I hope that the photographic collection presented in this work can contribute to preserving the memory of these brave Brazilians, who since their origins together with their descendants, have been describing a heroic trajectory of construction and prosperity, which we can have access to today.
May your legacy of overcoming strengthen us even more and let us never forget that ultimately we are part of one people, and that, therefore, we always be very proud of our origins without losing sight of what we are also originating.
This work is a tribute to German immigration but it is also a tribute to all the people who immigrated here, settled and made their lives here, essential workforce for building our country. I also dedicate this work to all those who migrate. So that your pain is not in vain and that your fearlessness in the face of the challenge of the unknown is the driving force for the fulfillment of your mission, compensated by the fruits that this struggle is capable of bringing.
In particular I offer this work to my mother Sonia Léa Reichardt Machado of Germanic descent, in honor of the memory of her and my ancestors. In the same way I offer it to my grandson Vítor Freiberger Machado for what he represents in my life, and so that this photographic document remains alive for future generations: because preserving the past is (the) future.

Also in Rancho Queimado the branch that passed through Teresópolis converged with the Santa Isabel branch. Furthermore these two branches joined together in the town of Taquaras with the branch that came from São Pedro de Alcântara via Angelina, and from there the path continued in the direction of Lages.

CASSAVA CUCA RECIPE by Mrs. Maria Jochem Kirchner:
Dough ingredients: 1 cup raw grated cassava, 1 cup sugar, 1 whole egg, ½ spoon of salt, 1 spoon of bread yeast, ½ kg wheat flour, ½ spoon of sugar and ½ cup of warm water, 2 cups of boiling water. How to make it: Place the yeast in a container with ½ spoonful of sugar and ½ cup of warm water. Let it rise for 5 to 10 minutes. Place raw cassava in a pan and mix with boiling water until it becomes a thick transparent syrup, stirring constantly. Once warm, place in a container. Add salt, sugar and egg, stirring constantly. Add half a portion of wheat, stirring and the risen yeast and finally the rest of the wheat. Cover the dough and let it rise for 30 to 40 minutes. Grease the pan with lard. Place all the risen dough in the pan and let it rise again in the pan for another 20 minutes.
Farofa Ingredients: 1 tablespoon butter, 1 tablespoon lard, 1 cup sugar, 1 ½ cup wheat flour. How to make: Mix all ingredients in a container and set aside.
