Westfalen German Folk Dance Group: 20 years preserving traditions

”Keep German culture alive through dance, honoring the legacy of the ancestors and preserving the traditions for future generations”
It was with these objectives that twenty years ago the former Mr. Afonso Dresch, Mayor of Treze Tílias, Brazil, idealized the creation of the "Westfalen German Folk Dance Group". This action took place after the Feast of Nations held in 1998 which also brought to the history of the city, as well as the Austrian ethnic group, the representation of the German and Italian ethnicities as part of the colonization. Due to her experience as a dance teacher, on June 7th Ágatha Cristina Speck Portilla was invited to coordinate the group, and even during the celebrations of October of that year Westfalen debuted at SOCAP - Sociedade Cultural Artística Papuan. This presentation was highlighted in the article "October Festivals - Ten thousand people celebrate the Tirolerfest", by Adilson Rodycz, for A Notícia newspaper in October 1998: “Westfalen group made its debut and promises to further strengthen the movement Cultural Heritage in Treze Tílias”. The origin of the name Westfalen (Westphalia in English) comes from the German state of Nordrhein Westfalen (North Rhine) place of origin of the family of former Mayor Dresch. Initially the group performed in costumes representing the German State of Schleswig Holstein and later from Baden-Württemberg (Baden-Württemberg). To commemorate the 20th anniversary it is planned to inaugurate a Titisee clothing, region from the Schwarzwald (Black Forest). The group made several presentations in South and Southeast regions of Brazil, as well as in Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. In 2007 was the winner of the South Brazilian Dance Festival in Joaçaba, Brazil, and in 2008 participated of the United Samba School of Herval, in Joaçaba too.
Its repertoire includes dances performed in polka, acrobatic and high physical strength, as well as dances with greater complexity and choreographic value which:Berlinerpolka; Schächer; Ringeltanz"a court dance"; Knopfloch (Buttonhole in English) shows one of the characteristics of the German folklore that is to represent situations of daily demonstrating through its choreography the act of buttoning; Kruz Konig (Flying dance); Grosses Triolet shows one of the characteristics of German folklore that is the Triolet: a boy dancing with two girls, with a very rich choreography and performed in Mazurca; Schlitzenpolka characteristic dance of neofolclore: the new German folklore, a very lively polka which originates from the dance and parties of the Munich Oktoberfest; Webertanz (Weaver`s dance), Germans have several dances depicting professions and this one represents the weaver`s profession; Rheinländer aus Hanauerland a very lively polka from Rhineland, region located in the west of Germany, and requires a lot of resistance of the dancers; Brütanz; Fröhlicherkreis a dance performed with guests and also with the children of the members of the group; Pommersche Krakoviak a popular dance in Krakow, Poland, which was assimilated by the Germans of the region and is characterized by the dexterity of dancers in the execution of figures; Schwäbische Tanzfolge ; etc.
The rehearsals take place every Sunday night at the IELB Party Hall of the São Paulo Community in Treze Tílias, which are also moments of fun and fraternization. Apart from their love for dance they have a true friendship and integration among their members forming a great family: the Westfalen family. Flayra, Heiko, Miguel, Isaac, Sarah, Hannah, Maythe, Olívia e Otávio are the children of some of the couples of the group and are also part of Westfalen. Usually they take part in the Fröhlicherkreis dance. They are part of the new generation that is emerging and for them there is a special dedication because they represent the continuity. To them their parentes transmit their love of culture hoping that through them the German culture will also be kept alive, honoring the heritage left by the ancestors and preserving the traditions: the group`s main objectives.
In 2012 I met Treze Tílias and the love for the city and its culture was immediately. I made great friends there and since then I have returned to the city. The result of this was also the countless images I recorded of those moments, moments that touched me more deeply. Many of those images were made without worrying about the technical quality: I realized them only to have the possibility to remember in the future, and much of that material concerns to Westfalen Group. So because of this important jubilee celebration and so that we can remember some of those moments I put together in a single film (21 minutes in Portuguese) some videos which represent in part the feeling of affection that I have for the cultural work they have been doing.
Dance is celebration. Dance is a language that goes beyond words. Dance fascinates us and it was with this perspective that this photographic exhibition was elaborated. It is composed of photographs that I have made of Westfalen Group since 2012 when I was in Treze Tílias for the first time, and photos given by their members that tell us a little about the trajectory of their 20 years. Also I included some photographs of Tirolerfest Historic Parade of 2017 granted by my friend Gonzalo Humeres Flores.
I offer this work to the Dance! For this form of cultural expression which, among all forms of arts, is part of the rites. And therefore holds the ability to magically connect us synchronically to outer and inner realities, between the upper and lower spheres. That allows us to simultaneously access the numinous space and time ... the greater dimension of being, of existing, of belonging: to the same group, the same community, the same roots, the same beliefs, the same God... It is through the rites that we bring to the present moment contents that have been lived in the past, and it is through them that we actualize our links. And when we bring them into the present moment we renew our brotherhood belongings.
Strength, perseverance, determination ... energy, rhythm, music, beauty, grace, smiles ... the feeling of family, friendship, integration, historical and cultural preservation are, some of the qualities that I can say of this valuable group of friends that enchants us with its art. It is for you that I dedicate this work, an honor for me!
In the same way, through your dance I also pay homage to the dance groups of Treze Tílias: Schuhplatter Folk Dance Group, Tiroler Plattler Dance Group, Lindental Dance Group, Volare Italian Dance Group, Alpen Master Folk Dance Group and Tanzgruppe Edelweiss that through the dance transmit our traditions and values that distinguish Santa Catarina culture.
